Meet Jonah son of Amittai, a prophet in Israel. The LORD tells him to get up and go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach against it, because its wickedness has reached him. Nineveh is east. A long way east.

Four chapters. One very reluctant prophet.
Nobody knows who wrote the book of Jonah. It tells one story about a prophet from Israel who was sent to Nineveh, the great city of the Assyrians, Israel's enemies, and did everything he could not to go. It ends on a question and leaves it with you.

Meanwhile the LORD has a great fish ready. It swallows Jonah. He's inside it for three days and three nights.

It takes three days to walk across Nineveh. This is day one. That's the whole sermon.
God sees what they do, that they've turned from their evil ways. And he doesn't bring the disaster he'd threatened.

The LORD asks him one thing. Do you have any right to be angry?
The LORD's last word to him: you cared about a plant you never tended and never made grow. It came up in a night and died in a night. And shouldn't I care about Nineveh, that great city, with more than 120,000 people who can't tell their right hand from their left, and all those animals?

That's where the book ends. On the question.
Before this one starts. Jonah son of Amittai is a prophet in Israel, from a village called Gath-hepher in Galilee. The LORD has just given him a job: go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach against it. God has seen how evil it’s got. Nineveh is the great city of Assyria, Israel’s enemy. It’s east. A long way east.

That wind didn’t just happen. The LORD hurled it at the sea.

That’s it. That’s the whole message.
God sees what they do, that they’ve turned from their evil ways. And he doesn’t bring the disaster he said he would.

The book doesn’t give his answer. Next thing, he walks out of the city.

The LORD God appointed that plant. Same word as the fish.
Replying to @jonah
Appointed. God appointed a worm.
Replying to @jonah
The wind was appointed too.
