Jonah

A prophet sent east, a ship going west, a storm, a fish, a city that listened and a plant, told by the people who were there.

How Story is made

In Israel

Before this one starts. Jonah son of Amittai is a prophet in Israel, from a village called Gath-hepher in Galilee. The LORD has just given him a job: go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach against it. God has seen how evil it’s got. Nineveh is the great city of Assyria, Israel’s enemy. It’s east. A long way east.

Jonah@jonah

The LORD wants me to go to Nineveh. Nineveh. Walk into the middle of it and tell them he’s seen how evil they are.

Replying to @jonah

Nineveh? Rather you than me.

Joppa

Jonah@jonah · Joppa

Down at Joppa, on the coast. Found a ship going to Tarshish. Paid the fare.

Jonah. Tarshish is the other way.

The ship's captain@captain.joppa.tarshish · Joppa

Joppa to Tarshish, about as far west as anyone sails. Cargo loaded, crew aboard, and one passenger. A man from Israel. Paid his fare and went below.

At sea

Where’s this wind come from, man? Never seen a sea like it. She’s going to break up.

Replying to @deckhand.tarshish

That wind didn’t just happen. The LORD hurled it at the sea.

Every man on this ship is shouting to his own god. Every one. Different god, same prayer: don’t let us die.

Replying to @oarsman.tarshish

Still shouting. Still nothing.

The ship's captain@captain.joppa.tarshish

The cargo’s going over the side. All of it. Anything to make her lighter.

Replying to @captain.joppa.tarshish

Whole load. Gone.

The ship's captain@captain.joppa.tarshish

Has anyone seen the passenger?

Replying to @captain.joppa.tarshish

He went below. Right down to the bottom of the ship.

Jonah@jonah

Woken up by the captain. Apparently there’s a storm.

Replying to @jonah

Apparently.

The storm

Right. We’re drawing lots to find out who’s to blame. Someone on this ship has brought this on us.

Replying to @crew.tarshish

It’s landed on the passenger.

Show 1 more reply

So we’re asking him everything. Whose fault is this? What do you do for a living? Where have you come from? What country? Who are your people?

Jonah@jonah

Replying to @deckhand.tarshish

I’m a Hebrew. I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.

Show 4 more replies

It keeps getting worse. Asked him straight: what do we have to do to you to make this sea calm down?

Jonah@jonah

Replying to @deckhand.tarshish

Pick me up and throw me in. It’ll go calm for you. I know this storm is my fault.

Show 2 more replies

Rowing for land. All of us, everything we’ve got.

Replying to @oarsman.tarshish

Not getting any closer. The sea just keeps getting wilder.

Overboard

We’re praying to his God now. The LORD. Please don’t let us die for taking this man’s life. Don’t hold his death against us. You’ve done what you wanted to do.

The ship's captain@captain.joppa.tarshish

We picked him up and threw him in.

The ship's captain@captain.joppa.tarshish

We’ve offered a sacrifice to the LORD and every man has made him vows. The same men who were each shouting to their own god.

Replying to @captain.joppa.tarshish

I’ve never been so afraid of anything. The LORD. His God.

Inside the fish

Meanwhile the LORD had a great fish ready. It swallows Jonah.

Jonah@jonah

Update. I’m inside a fish.

Someone in Gath-hepher@gathhepher.local

Replying to @jonah

Sorry, a what?

Three days and three nights in the fish. Jesus pointed back to this one.

Jesus@jesusNo sign will be given except the sign of Jonah. As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Three days and three nights

Jonah@jonah

In trouble, I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From as deep down as it goes, I cried for help, and he heard.

Jonah@jonah

You threw me into the deep, into the heart of the sea. Every wave you’ve got broke over me. Seaweed round my head. Down to the roots of the mountains, locked in for good. But you brought my life up from the pit, LORD my God.

Jonah@jonah

As my life was slipping away, I remembered the LORD. And my prayer reached him, in his holy temple.

Jonah@jonah

I’ll thank you out loud. I’ll sacrifice to you. I’ll keep my vow. Salvation comes from the LORD.

Dry land

Jonah@jonah

The LORD spoke to the fish. The fish vomited me out onto dry land. I will not be taking questions.

Someone in Gath-hepher@gathhepher.local

Replying to @jonah

One question.

Jonah@jonah

The LORD has spoken to me again. Second time. Same job: get up, go to Nineveh, and say what he gives me to say.

Nineveh, day one

The writer of Jonah@bookofjonah · Nineveh

Nineveh is enormous. It takes three days just to walk across it. Jonah’s first day in, he starts.

Jonah@jonah · Nineveh

Forty more days, and Nineveh will be brought down.

Nineveh, that week

Someone in Nineveh@nineveh.local · Nineveh

A prophet from Israel walked in and said the city has forty days. And people believe it. Believe God, I mean. Nobody’s laughing.

A trader in Nineveh@nineveh.trader

Replying to @nineveh.local

Nobody’s eating either. Someone’s called a fast.

Word reached the king. He got up off his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself in sackcloth and sat down in the ashes.

The king of Nineveh@king.of.nineveh · Nineveh

By order of the king and his nobles. Nobody eats. Nobody drinks. Not people, not animals, not the herds, not the flocks. Everyone in sackcloth, animals too. Everyone call out to God with everything you’ve got. Turn from your evil ways, and from the violence you do.

The king of Nineveh@king.of.nineveh

Who knows? God may turn and change his mind. He may turn from his anger, and we won’t die.

Someone in Nineveh@nineveh.local

Replying to @king.of.nineveh

Who knows. That’s all any of us has got.

Someone in Nineveh@nineveh.local

People are stopping. Stopping what they were doing to each other. Everyone’s calling out to God.

God sees what they do, that they’ve turned from their evil ways. And he doesn’t bring the disaster he said he would.

Afterwards

Jonah@jonah

Said this to the LORD. Isn’t this exactly what I said back home? It’s why I ran for Tarshish. I knew you’re gracious and compassionate, slow to get angry, full of love, a God who backs off from disaster. So take my life. I’d rather die than live.

Jonah@jonahHere’s the thing, though. I know what he’s like. Gracious. Compassionate. Slow to get angry. I go, I warn them, and he backs off. You watch.
Someone in Gath-hepher@gathhepher.local

Replying to @jonah

He did say this. I was there.

Jonah’s quoting this. The LORD’s own words about himself, to Moses on the mountain. Jonah is using them as a complaint.

Moses@moses · Mount SinaiThe LORD passed in front of me, calling out his own name. Compassionate and gracious. Slow to get angry. Overflowing with love that doesn’t quit, and faithfulness. Forgives wrongdoing, but never lets the guilty off.

East of the city

Jonah@jonah · East of Nineveh

Out of the city. Built myself a shelter on the east side. Sitting in the shade. Going to watch what happens to Nineveh.

Someone in Nineveh@nineveh.local

Replying to @jonah

Watch what, exactly?

Jonah@jonah · East of Nineveh

A plant. Grew up in one night, right over my shelter. Proper shade on my head. Honestly? Very happy about this plant.

Jonah is happy about something.

Sun’s up and now there’s a scorching wind from the east. Sun beating down on my head. I feel faint. I’d rather die than live.

Replying to @jonah

The wind was appointed too.

Jonah@jonah

God asked me if I’ve any right to be angry about the plant. I do. I’m angry enough to die.

Jonah@jonahA worm.

The last word

The LORD’s last word to him. Jonah cared about a plant he never tended and never made grow. It came up in a night and died in a night. So shouldn’t God care about Nineveh, that great city? More than 120,000 people who can’t tell their right hand from their left. And a lot of animals.

A herdsman at Nineveh@nineveh.herds

Replying to @bookofjonah

He mentioned the animals.

That’s the whole book of Jonah. It ends on God’s question, and we never hear Jonah’s answer.
