Did what the dream said.
Joseph, son of Jacob, from David’s family line. Engaged to Mary. Then she was pregnant, and it wasn’t mine. I was going to end it quietly. Then the dreams started. Four of them. Every time, I got up and did what I was told.

Then an angel in a dream: don’t be afraid to take her home. The child is from the Holy Spirit. Name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. So I did.
He’s here. A son. We’ve named him Jesus.
They’d only just gone when I had another dream. Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to Egypt. Herod wants him dead. We left in the night.
Herod’s dead. We’re back, but not in Judea. We’ve settled up north, in Nazareth.
Mary’s my wife. I’ve brought her home.

Going up to Bethlehem in Judea to register. It’s David’s town, and I’m from David’s family line. Mary’s coming with me. She’s expecting.
He’s here. A son. Mary’s wrapped him up snug and laid him in a manger. The animals’ feeding trough. There wasn’t any room for us in the guest room.

Eight days old. Circumcised and named today. His name is Jesus.

Mary and I just stood there. Amazed at what he was saying about our boy.
Another dream. Herod is dead. The angel says take the child and his mother and go back to Israel. The ones who wanted him dead are gone.

Change of plan. Herod’s son Archelaus is king in Judea now. I’m not taking him anywhere near that. Had another dream. We’re going north, to Galilee.
