Bad news in the village. Lazarus is ill. Martha and Mary’s brother. Bethany’s small. Everyone knows them.

A neighbour in Bethany

Small village. Everyone knows everyone.
I live in Bethany, a village on the slopes of the Mount of Olives, just under two miles out of Jerusalem. Martha, Mary and Lazarus are neighbours. When something happens to one of us, the whole village knows by evening.

If anyone can help, it’s him.
Lazarus has died. They’ve laid him in the tomb outside the village. A cave, with a big stone across the front.

They did. He hasn’t come.
Four days since we laid him in the tomb. And word’s just reached the house: Jesus is on the road outside the village.

A few of us are moving the stone now.
He’s coming out. Lazarus is walking out of the tomb. Hands and feet still bound in strips of linen. A cloth round his face.

We’re unwrapping him. It’s Lazarus. It’s actually Lazarus.

Martha serving. Of course she is.
Word’s got round that he’s here. There’s a big crowd outside the house now. And they haven’t only come for him. They want to see Lazarus.

Kill him? He’s only just come back.

Back here for the night, then.
