I bow when I’m told to.
One of the royal servants on duty at the king’s gate in Susa. When the king orders everyone to bow to Haman, we bow. One man there didn’t.
Susa, PersiaFirst seen Esther 3:2

A tax holiday. Long live the queen.
Two of the king's doorkeepers, Bigthan and Teresh, were plotting to kill the king. Word is Mordecai, who sits here at the gate, found out. He told the queen, and she told the king it came from Mordecai.

It checked out. Both of them were hanged. The whole thing's been written in the royal records, in front of the king.
Everyone at the gate bows to Haman now. King's orders. Except Mordecai. We kept asking him why he's disobeying the king. Day after day. Nothing. He'd told us he's a Jew.

So we told Haman. Wanted to see whether Mordecai would get away with it.
Proper drama at the gate. Bigthan and Teresh, two of the doorkeepers who guard the king’s entrance. Got angry about something and were plotting to kill the king.

Mordecai. He got wind of it somehow and told the queen. She told the king, and gave Mordecai the credit.

They looked into it. True. Both of them were hanged.

Right. We’ve told Haman. Let’s see if he gets away with it.
Haman’s seen it for himself now. Everyone at the gate down on the ground, and Mordecai just standing there. You could see the rage in him.

He came as far as the gate and stopped there. You’re not allowed through in sackcloth.
Haman just came out through the gate looking happier than I’ve ever seen him. Then he saw Mordecai. Mordecai didn’t stand up. Didn’t so much as flinch.

That’s Mordecai. From the gate. The bloke who wouldn’t bow to him.

Wait. Mordecai from the gate is the queen’s family??
