Samuel turned up in Bethlehem today with a heifer. The elders went out to meet him literally shaking. Asked if it was a friendly visit. He says yes, he’s here to make a sacrifice, and he’s invited Jesse and his sons.

Jesse’s youngest has just set off for the king’s house. Donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat. You don’t turn up at a king’s empty-handed.
