The Damascus road

The man hunting Jesus’ followers meets him at noon on the road, as it happened, by the people who were there.

How Story is made

After Stephen

Replying to @jerusalem.local

It’s why most of us have gone. Judea, Samaria, anywhere. The apostles are the only ones still in the city.

Paul@paul · Jerusalem

I’m sure of this. I have to do everything I can against the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Replying to @paul

He means it. He’s in the synagogues too, one after another, having them beaten and locked up.

Not long after, the high priest’s house

Luke@luke

If you’re just joining: that’s Saul. A young Pharisee from Tarsus, trained here in Jerusalem. He stood and approved while they stoned Stephen, and every breath he takes now is a threat to kill Jesus’ followers.

Luke@luke · JerusalemThey cover their ears, yell and rush at him. They drag him out of the city and stone him. The witnesses leave their coats at the feet of a young man called Saul.
Someone who writes letters for the high priest@highpriest.scribe · The high priest’s house

Letters to write today. Saul came to the high priest asking for them, addressed to the synagogues in Damascus. Anyone there who belongs to the Way, which is what people are calling the Jesus movement, man or woman, he can bring back to Jerusalem as a prisoner.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Replying to @highpriest.scribe

Damascus? That’s not even Judea. He’s following them to other cities now?

Damascus, meanwhile

A believer in Damascus@damascus.believer · Damascus

Damascus, up in Syria, days north of Jerusalem. There are believers here too. And everyone who comes here from Jerusalem tells us about one man. Saul. What he’s done to the believers down there.

On the road north

One of Saul's travelling companions@saul.companion · The road to Damascus

Days on the road with Saul, heading north. The high priest’s letters are in his bag. Nearly at Damascus now.

Replying to @saul.companion

If he finds any of them there, they come back to Jerusalem as prisoners. That’s the job.

Noon, just outside Damascus

One of Saul's travelling companions@saul.companion · The road to Damascus

Noon. A light out of the sky, brighter than the sun. All round us.

Replying to @saul.companion

Every one of us is on the ground.

There’s a voice. I can hear it. I can’t make out the words. And there’s nobody there.

It’s gone. Saul’s getting up off the road. His eyes are open. He can’t see anything.

That day, Straight Street

Someone at Judas’s house, Straight Street@straight.street · Straight Street, Damascus

We’ve got a guest. Judas’s house, on Straight Street. A man from Tarsus called Saul. Came in led by the hand. He can’t see.

The second day

Someone at Judas’s house, Straight Street@straight.street · Straight Street, Damascus

Day two. Still blind. Still nothing to eat or drink. He’s praying.

The third day

Someone at Judas’s house, Straight Street@straight.street · Straight Street, Damascus

Day three. Still praying. Still hasn’t eaten a thing.

A woman who follows Jesus in Damascus@damascus.woman · Damascus

It’s true. Saul of Tarsus is here, in Damascus. With authority from the chief priests to arrest anyone who calls on Jesus’ name.

A believer in Damascus@damascus.believer

Replying to @damascus.woman

Someone said he came in blind. Led through the gate by the hand.

The Lord just spoke to me in a vision. Said my name. I said, here I am, Lord. He told me to go to Judas’s house on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus called Saul. He’s praying. He’s seen a vision of me coming in and putting my hands on him so he can see again.

Someone at the door asking for Saul of Tarsus. Ananias. Says the Lord sent him.

Ananias of Damascus@ananiasdamascus · Straight Street, Damascus

Put my hands on him. Brother Saul, I said. The Lord Jesus, the one who appeared to you on the road, has sent me. So you can see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Replying to @ananiasdamascus

Something like scales just fell from his eyes. I was literally standing right there.

Paul@paul

Ananias told me the God of our ancestors has chosen me. To know what he wants, to see the Righteous One and hear him speak. I’m to tell everyone what I’ve seen and heard. Then he said: so what are you waiting for?

Paul@paul

Replying to @paul

Get up, be baptised, wash your sins away, calling on his name. So I got up and was baptised.

Before he got here, I’d already seen him. In a vision. A man called Ananias, coming in and putting his hands on me so I’d see again. Then there he was.

Ananias of Damascus@ananiasdamascusOn my way to Straight Street.

We came to Damascus to arrest people like Ananias. Now Saul’s been baptised.

The next few days

A believer in Damascus@damascus.believer · Damascus

Saul’s staying with us. With the believers. Several days now.

Replying to @damascus.believer

Days ago I was scared he’d come to my door. Now he’s at our table.

In the synagogues

Someone in Damascus@damascus.local · A synagogue in Damascus

Saul of Tarsus just stood up in synagogue and said it. Jesus is the Son of God.

Replying to @damascus.local

Is this not the man who caused havoc among those in Jerusalem who call on that name?

Now he’s in ours. Same thing. Jesus is the Son of God.

Someone in Damascus@damascus.local

He’s going from one synagogue to the next.

Every synagogue his letters were addressed to.

Paul@paul

Jesus is the Messiah. And I can prove it.

Paul@paul

Turn back to God. Then live like you mean it.

Someone in Damascus@damascus.local

Every time someone argues with him, he wins. He keeps proving that Jesus is the Messiah, and nobody here can answer him.

Replying to @damascus.local

And he’s getting stronger, not weaker.

People keep asking what happened on the road. It started with this. We all hit the ground, and I heard a voice speaking to me in Hebrew.

One of Saul's travelling companions@saul.companion · The road to DamascusNoon. A light out of the sky, brighter than the sun. All round us.
Paul@paul

Replying to @paul

It said my name, twice, and asked why I’m persecuting him. And that it’s hard for me, kicking against the goads. Like an ox kicking back at the stick that drives it.

Many days later

A believer in Damascus@damascus.believer · Damascus

Word’s got to Saul. There’s a plan. Some people here want him dead.

Replying to @damascus.believer

So that’s who they’re waiting for. There’ve been blokes at the city gates day and night, watching everyone who goes through.

That night, the city wall

A believer in Damascus@damascus.believer · The wall of Damascus

There’s a window in the city wall. We’ve got Saul in a big basket. Lowering him down, slowly, in the dark.

A window in the city wall, and someone let down outside it in the dark. Rahab did the same for the two spies at Jericho.

The other spy@spy.two.jericho · JerichoShe made us swear to save her family, then let us down the wall on a rope from her window. Read the small print, though: red cord tied in that window, and everyone inside the house. Anyone out in the street is on their own.

Stephen asked God not to hold it against them. One of the men standing there that day is preaching Jesus now.

Luke@lukeStephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he went down on his knees and asked the Lord not to hold this sin against them. And then he died.
Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Saul studied under Gamaliel. Gamaliel’s the one who said this.

Gamaliel@gamaliel · JerusalemLeave these men alone. If this is merely a human undertaking, it will collapse on its own. If it is from God, you will not be able to stop them. You may find yourselves fighting against God.

Later, Jerusalem

Paul@paul · Jerusalem

Saying it here now, in Jerusalem, out loud. The same thing I said in Damascus.

Someone from the Synagogue of the Freedmen@freedmen.synagogue · Jerusalem

Argued with Saul today. He’s from Tarsus in Cilicia, speaks Greek, like a lot of us. He was the one going after these people. Now he’s one of them.

Replying to @freedmen.synagogue

We’ve heard this before. From Stephen.

A believer in Jerusalem@jerusalem.believer

We’ve found out. Some of the Greek-speaking Jews he’s been arguing with are trying to kill him.

Replying to @jerusalem.believer

That’s how it started with Stephen.

I was praying in the temple and fell into a trance. I saw the Lord. Hurry, he said, get out of Jerusalem. They won’t accept what you tell them about me.

Paul@paul

I said, Lord, they know what I was. I went from synagogue to synagogue, putting your people in prison and beating them. When Stephen was killed, I stood there approving and minded the coats.

Tarsus. Where I started.

After that

Luke@luke

And then, quiet. The church right across Judea, Galilee and Samaria has peace. Growing stronger, growing in numbers, living in awe of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Replying to @luke

Nobody’s being dragged out of their house on our street any more.

Saul goes home to Tarsus. He’ll be back.
