Full council this morning. The rulers, the elders, the teachers of the law, Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, the rest of the high priest’s family. The two Galileans from yesterday stood in the middle. We asked them: by what power, in whose name, did you do this?

You didn’t hear this from me.
I sit on the Sanhedrin, Jerusalem’s highest court: the high priest, the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law. Some of what we say is said behind closed doors. Some of it gets out.

Ordinary men. No training. And they talk like that. Then it clicked: these two were with Jesus. And the man they healed is standing right there beside them. What do you even say to that?

You didn’t hear this from me. We sent them out and talked it over. Nobody could deny it. Everyone in Jerusalem knows that man’s been healed. So the plan is to warn them never to speak to anyone in that name again, and stop it spreading.

More threats, then we let them go. What else could we do? The whole city is praising God over that man.
Early start. The full council, all the elders of Israel. Officers sent to the jail to bring the apostles in.

The captain and the chief priests have no idea what’s going on.

The room wants them dead. They mean it.
Then Gamaliel stood up. Pharisee, teacher of the law, the one everybody respects. Had the apostles taken outside for a bit before he said a word.

We went with Gamaliel. Mostly. Had them flogged first, told them again not to speak in Jesus’ name, and let them go.

The room’s furious. Grown men grinding their teeth at him.
They covered their ears, shouted him down and rushed at him, all together. They’re dragging Stephen out of the city.

He’s not doing it on his own. He has authority from the chief priests. And when any of them face a death sentence, his vote is against them.

Gamaliel’s student. A Pharisee, the strictest kind there is. He’s as serious about God as anyone in this city.

With the whole council behind him. We all know about those letters.
