The first days

From an upstairs room of a hundred and twenty to a church scattered across the country, as it happened, by the people who were there.

How Story is made

Back in Jerusalem

Luke@luke

Picking up where the Gospels stop. Jesus has been taken up into heaven from the Mount of Olives, just outside Jerusalem. Before he went, he told his friends not to leave the city. Wait, he said. In a few days you’ll be baptised with the Holy Spirit. So they’re waiting.

The believers@thebelieversHe led us out as far as Bethany, lifted his hands and blessed us. And while he was blessing us, he was taken up. A cloud hid him, and he was gone.
John@johnzebedee · The upstairs room

Temple by day, and the rest of the time we’re in the upstairs room where we’re staying. The eleven of us, the women, his mother Mary, his brothers. Mostly we pray. Together, all day.

John@johnzebedeeWalked back to Jerusalem full of joy. We’re in the temple every day now, praising God.
James@jamesjerusalem

Replying to @johnzebedee

His brothers. Yes. There was a time our family went to bring him home because we thought he’d lost his mind. Now we’re in this room, praying with his friends.

A few days later, the upstairs room

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Stood up in front of everyone today. There are about a hundred and twenty of us now. Judas was one of us. He had his share in this work. The Psalms said someone else would take his place, and someone has to. It needs to be one of the men who were with us the whole way, from John baptising at the river to the day Jesus was taken up. Someone who saw him alive.

The believers@thebelievers

Replying to @simonpeter

Two names put forward. Joseph Barsabbas, the one we call Justus, and Matthias. We prayed and asked the Lord, who knows everyone’s heart, to show us which one he’s chosen. Then we drew lots.

Days later: Pentecost

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local · Jerusalem

Pentecost. The harvest festival, seven weeks after Passover, and the city’s packed again. Jews from every country under the sun, all up for the feast. You can hear every accent in the world at the temple.

A visitor at Pentecost@pentecost.visitor

Replying to @jerusalem.local

Came a long way for this one.

Pentecost, morning

The believers@thebelievers · The house

All of us together in the house. Then a sound from the sky like a violent wind, and it fills the whole place. Then something like flames of fire, splitting apart and settling on each one of us. And we’re all speaking. In languages none of us have ever learnt.

John the Baptist, years ago: someone’s coming who’ll baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Jesus told them to wait in the city for exactly this.

John the Baptist@johnthebaptistI know what you're all wondering. I baptise you with water. Someone more powerful than me is coming, and I'm not fit to untie his sandals. He'll baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

What was that noise?

A visitor from Rome@rome.visitor

Replying to @jerusalem.local

Everyone’s running towards it. Me included.

A visitor at Pentecost@pentecost.visitor

A whole crowd, and in the middle of it a group of men talking about the amazing things God has done. And I understand every word. They’re speaking my language. The one I grew up with, back home.

A visitor from Rome@rome.visitor

Replying to @pentecost.visitor

Same. I’m from Rome and I’m hearing them in mine. Some of our group are converts and they’re hearing it too.

Pentecost, nine in the morning

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @simonpeter

Peter’s standing up to speak to the whole crowd. The rest of us are standing with him.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

What you’re seeing is what the prophet Joel talked about. God said that in the last days he’d pour out his Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will speak his words. Young men will see visions, old men will dream dreams. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

A visitor from Egypt@egypt.visitor

Replying to @simonpeter

So that’s what this is.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Jesus of Nazareth. You know who he was. You saw the miracles God did through him, right here among you. He was handed over, just as God had planned, and you had him nailed to a cross. God raised him. Death couldn’t keep hold of him.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

David wrote this, that God wouldn’t let his holy one rot in the grave. But David died. His tomb is just down the road. He saw ahead and was talking about the Messiah rising. God has raised Jesus, and every one of us standing up here saw him.

David@davidYou won't abandon me to the grave. You won't let your holy one see decay. You've shown me the path of life.
Simon Peter@simonpeter

David never went up to heaven either, and he still wrote this. Jesus is at God’s right hand now. He’s received the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured him out. That’s what you’re seeing and hearing.

David@davidThe LORD tells my Lord to sit at his right hand until he makes his enemies a footstool for his feet.
Simon Peter@simonpeter

So be sure of this, all of Israel. God has made this Jesus, the one you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.

Replying to @simonpeter

I was in the crowd outside Pilate’s that morning.

Pentecost, that evening

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Seven weeks ago, by a fire in the high priest’s courtyard, I swore I didn’t know him. Today I stood up in front of thousands of people and told them God has made him Lord and Messiah.

Simon Peter@simonpeterMay God curse me if I’m lying. I do not know the man.
John@johnzebedee

Replying to @simonpeter

I’m the one who got him into that courtyard. Today I was standing right next to him.

John@johnzebedee

About three thousand people baptised today. We were a hundred and twenty this morning.

A visitor at Pentecost@pentecost.visitor

Replying to @johnzebedee

I’m one of them.

The weeks after

The believers@thebelievers

What a day looks like now: 1. Listening to the apostles teach. 2. Eating together. 3. Praying. 4. More people joining. Every single day.

The believers@thebelievers

Nobody here goes without. People are selling what they own and sharing the money with anyone who needs it.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Replying to @thebelievers

Selling their own things, for people who were strangers a couple of months ago.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

The Jesus people. In the temple courts every day, then round each other’s houses every night for bread, glad as anything, praising God. Honestly? People like them.

Someone at the temple@temple.regular

Replying to @jerusalem.local

And the apostles keep doing wonders and signs. Everyone’s a bit in awe.

Three in the afternoon, the temple

The man at the Beautiful Gate@walkingandjumping · The Beautiful Gate

Usual spot, by the gate they call Beautiful. Someone carries me here every day. It’s the three o’clock prayers, so it’s busy. Two men on their way in. I asked them for money. One of them looked straight at me and said: look at us. So I looked. Thought I was getting something good.

Someone at the temple@temple.regular

Replying to @walkingandjumping

I walk past him every afternoon.

Show 2 more replies
Someone at the temple@temple.regular

There’s a man walking round the temple courts, jumping, praising God at the top of his voice. Isn’t that the man who sits begging at the Beautiful Gate?

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Replying to @temple.regular

Wait. The one who gets carried there every single day?

Show 3 more replies

Solomon's Colonnade, a few minutes later

Simon Peter@simonpeter · Solomon's Colonnade

Why is everyone staring at us like we made him walk? We didn’t. It’s the name of Jesus, and trusting him, that’s made this man strong. You all know him. You’ve seen him at that gate.

The crowds@thecrowds

Replying to @simonpeter

We have. Every day, for years.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Pilate had decided to let Jesus go. You said no. You asked for a murderer instead, and you killed the one who gives life. God raised him from the dead. We saw it.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

I know you didn’t understand what you were doing. Your leaders didn’t either. So turn back to God, and your sins will be wiped away.

The crowds@thecrowds

Replying to @simonpeter

Wiped away. All of it?

That evening

The Sadducees@thesadducees

Two of them. In our temple. Teaching the people that the dead will rise, because of Jesus. Unacceptable.

A temple officer@temple.officer

Replying to @thesadducees

The captain sent us over with the priests. Arrested them, Peter and John. It’s evening, so they’re in custody till morning.

Show 1 more reply
Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Lock them up if you like. Loads of people believed what they heard today. They’re saying it’s about five thousand men now.

The Sadducees@thesadducees

Replying to @jerusalem.local

Five thousand. Wonderful.

The next morning, the council

Someone on the council@council.insider · The council

Full council this morning. The rulers, the elders, the teachers of the law, Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, the rest of the high priest’s family. The two Galileans from yesterday stood in the middle. We asked them: by what power, in whose name, did you do this?

John@johnzebedee

Annas again. The last time he was asking the questions, it was Jesus in front of him. This time it’s us.

Annas@annasQuestioned him about his disciples and his teaching. He maintains he has always spoken openly. Synagogues, the temple, nothing in secret. Ask the people who heard me, he says.
Simon Peter@simonpeter

So we’re on trial for doing a kindness to a man who couldn’t walk. Right. Fine. Everyone should hear this. He was healed by the name of Jesus of Nazareth. You crucified him. God raised him from the dead. And there’s no other name under heaven that can save us.

Someone on the council@council.insider

Ordinary men. No training. And they talk like that. Then it clicked: these two were with Jesus. And the man they healed is standing right there beside them. What do you even say to that?

Replying to @council.insider

Standing. In front of the council. Me.

Show 1 more reply
The Council@thesanhedrin

Our ruling: you are not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. At all.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @thesanhedrin

Peter and I gave them the same answer. You decide whether God wants us listening to you or to him. We can’t stop talking about what we’ve seen and heard.

Show 1 more reply

That afternoon, back with the others

The believers@thebelievers

Peter and John are back and told us everything the chief priests said. So we all prayed together. Asked God to look at their threats, to give us the nerve to keep speaking, and to keep healing in Jesus’ name. When we finished, the whole place shook.

The believers@thebelievers

Replying to @thebelievers

What we prayed, more or less: Herod, Pilate, the nations and our own people all lined up against Jesus, right here in this city. And they only did what God had already decided would happen.

In those days

The believers@thebelievers

Nobody here says ‘that’s mine’. Anyone who owns land or a house sells it, brings the money and lays it at the apostles’ feet, and it’s shared out to whoever needs it. There isn’t one person among us in need.

Someone at the temple@temple.regular

And the apostles keep telling everyone that the Lord Jesus rose from the dead. With real power.

Barnabas@barnabas

Sold my field. Brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Replying to @barnabas

Joseph? The Levite from Cyprus?

Not long after

A believer who was there@was.in.the.room

A man called Ananias just brought in money from some land he and his wife Sapphira sold. Laid it at the apostles’ feet, the way Barnabas did.

A believer who was there@was.in.the.room

Replying to @was.in.the.room

Peter asked him why he’d let Satan fill his heart to lie to the Holy Spirit. He’d kept part of the money back for himself. Nobody made him sell. The land was his, and so was the money. You haven’t lied to people, Peter said. You’ve lied to God.

One of the young men@the.young.men

We’d just come back from burying Ananias. His wife Sapphira came in. She didn’t know.

Peter asked her if this was the price they’d got for the land. She said yes, that’s the price.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Everyone’s heard about the husband and wife. Nobody is taking it lightly. Not the believers, and not anyone else who hears about it.

Weeks later

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

People are carrying their sick out into the street on beds and mats, so that when Peter walks past, at least his shadow might fall on some of them. They’re coming in from all the towns round Jerusalem too. And every one of them is getting healed.

Someone at the temple@temple.regular

Replying to @jerusalem.local

The believers all meet in Solomon’s Colonnade now. Everyone thinks the world of them, but nobody else dares just wander in and join. And somehow more and more believe anyway, men and women, all the time.

That night

A temple officer@temple.officer

The high priest and his people, the Sadducees, have had enough. We’ve arrested the apostles. All of them. Public jail.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Replying to @temple.officer

They’re jealous. That’s all this is.

Daybreak

Simon Peter@simonpeter · The temple courts

In the night an angel of the Lord opened the jail doors and brought us out. Told us to go and stand in the temple courts and tell the people everything about this new life. So here we are. Temple courts. Sun’s just coming up.

Someone on the council@council.insider

Early start. The full council, all the elders of Israel. Officers sent to the jail to bring the apostles in.

A temple officer@temple.officer

Replying to @council.insider

Jail securely locked. Guards standing at the doors. We opened up. Nobody inside.

Later that morning, the council

The Council@thesanhedrin

We told you not to teach in this name. Now you’ve filled Jerusalem with it, and you’re trying to make us responsible for this man’s death.

The Council@thesanhedrinOur ruling: you are not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. At all.
Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @thesanhedrin

We have to obey God, not people. You killed Jesus by hanging him on a wooden cross. God raised him and put him at his right hand, so Israel could turn back and be forgiven. We saw it happen. So did the Holy Spirit.

Someone on the council@council.insider

Then Gamaliel stood up. Pharisee, teacher of the law, the one everybody respects. Had the apostles taken outside for a bit before he said a word.

Gamaliel@gamaliel

Replying to @council.insider

What I said in there, I’ll say out here. Think carefully. Theudas had four hundred followers. He was killed, and it all came to nothing. Judas the Galilean, the same. So leave these men alone. If this is just human, it’ll fall apart. If it’s from God, you won’t be able to stop them. You might find yourselves fighting God.

Show 2 more replies

Afterwards

Simon Peter@simonpeter

He told us it would be courts and floggings. Today it was. We walked out of there glad. Glad that God thought us worth being disgraced for his name.

The believers@thebelieversHe didn’t make it sound easy. Courts, floggings, being hated. He said all of it.
Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Replying to @simonpeter

Flogged, and they came out happy?

Some time later

Not trying to start anything. But our widows keep getting missed in the daily food share. The ones from families like mine, who grew up abroad speaking Greek. The Aramaic-speaking widows don’t get missed.

The believers@thebelievers

Replying to @greekspeaker

There are so many of us now. Things are falling through the cracks.

Matthew@matthew

The Twelve of us called everyone together. We can’t drop teaching God’s word to wait on tables. So: choose seven men everyone knows are full of the Spirit and wisdom, and put them in charge of this. We’ll keep to prayer and teaching.

Replying to @matthew

That works for us. Everyone’s happy with that.

The believers@thebelievers

Seven chosen. Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit. Philip. And five more. The apostles prayed and put their hands on them.

Philip@philipthesecond

Replying to @thebelievers

Yes, that Philip. No, not the apostle.

Stephen, one of the seven running the food share, is doing great wonders and signs among the people now as well.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Some men are going round saying they heard Stephen speak against Moses and against God. Word is, the men who kept losing arguments to him put them up to it.

A temple officer@temple.officer

The people are stirred up, and the elders and teachers of the law with them. Stephen’s been seized and brought to the council.

The council, Stephen's hearing

A witness at Stephen’s hearing@witness.stephen · The council

Gave my evidence. This man never stops speaking against this holy place and the law. We’ve heard him say Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.

Luke calls them false witnesses. And it’s the same charge they brought against Jesus, in front of the same council: he’ll destroy the temple.

A witness at the night hearing@witness.one · Caiaphas’s houseThey’ve sent him on to Caiaphas. Council’s up in the middle of the night looking for evidence against him. I gave some. I heard him say he’d destroy this temple made by human hands, and in three days build another one not made by hands.
Someone on the council@council.insider

Everyone in the room is staring at him. His face. It’s like the face of an angel.

Stephen@stephen

The high priest asked me if the charges are true. So I started with our father Abraham. God appeared to him before he’d even moved to Haran and told him to leave his country. He went. God didn’t give him a foot of ground here. Just a promise.

Moses@moses · HaranThen this. The LORD tells Abram to leave his country, his relatives and his father’s house, and go to a land he’ll show him. He’ll make him into a great nation, and every family on earth will be blessed through him.
Stephen@stephen

Joseph’s brothers were jealous and sold him into Egypt. But God was with him.

Moses@mosesWhat Reuben missed: while he was away, Judah asked what they’d gain by killing their own brother. So they sold him to traders heading for Egypt. Twenty pieces of silver.
Stephen@stephen

Moses tried to stop two of our own people fighting, and they shoved him away. Who made you ruler and judge? That same Moses is the one God sent to rescue them.

A Hebrew man in a fight@hebrew.fightingNext day the palace boy, Moses, tries to break up my fight with another Hebrew. Who made you our ruler and judge, mate? Going to kill me like you killed the Egyptian? Yeah. People know about that.
Stephen@stephen

And our ancestors still wouldn’t listen to him. They told Aaron to make them gods, then threw a party for a calf they’d made with their own hands.

The Israelites@theisraelitesWe went to Aaron. Make us gods to lead us. This Moses who brought us out of Egypt, nobody knows what’s happened to him.
Stephen@stephen

Solomon built God a house. But the Most High doesn’t live in houses made by human hands. Heaven is his throne, the prophet says, and the earth is his footstool. What house could you build for him?

Stephen@stephen

You stubborn people, with your hearts and ears closed. You always resist the Holy Spirit, just like your ancestors did. Was there a single prophet they didn’t persecute? They killed the ones who said the Righteous One was coming. And now you’ve betrayed and murdered him.

Someone on the council@council.insider

Replying to @stephen

The room’s furious. Grown men grinding their teeth at him.

Stephen@stephen

Look. I can see heaven open, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.

Outside the city

Someone on the council@council.insider

They covered their ears, shouted him down and rushed at him, all together. They’re dragging Stephen out of the city.

Before the stoning we left our coats at the feet of a young man called Saul. He was all for it.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Replying to @witness.stephen

Saul? The young Pharisee from Tarsus? Gamaliel’s student?

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local

Stephen’s on his knees while they stone him. He called out: Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Then, loud, so everyone heard: Lord, don’t hold this sin against them. And then he fell asleep. He’s gone.

Replying to @jerusalem.local

He was one of the seven chosen to sort out the food for our widows.
