Young men who wait on the king. Full of ideas.

The young attendants who serve King Xerxes in the palace at Susa. We run his errands, we read to him when he can’t sleep, and sometimes we make suggestions.

Our suggestion for the king: officers in every province to find beautiful young women and bring them all to the harem here in Susa, under Hegai's care, with beauty treatments. Whoever pleases the king becomes queen instead of Vashti.

He asked what she wanted. Anything, up to half the kingdom. She asked if he and Haman would come to a dinner she's made. That's it. That's the ask. So we had to go and fetch Haman, fast.

At the dinner, over the wine, he asked her again. Half the kingdom. She said: come to another dinner tomorrow, you and Haman, and then I'll tell you.

We got to the part where Mordecai exposed the two doorkeepers who plotted to kill the king. He asked what honour Mordecai got for that. We told him: nothing. Nothing was ever done for him.

The king told him: perfect. Go and do all of that for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king's gate. Don't leave anything out.

The king’s calmed down. And now he’s thinking about Vashti. What she did, and the decree against her. So we’ve had an idea.

Commissioners in every province. Find the most beautiful young women and bring them to the harem here in Susa, under Hegai’s care, with beauty treatments. Whichever one the king likes best becomes queen instead of Vashti. He’s said yes.

Haman had the king’s ear today. There’s a certain people, he says, scattered through every province. Their laws are different from everyone else’s, and they don’t keep the king’s. Not in the king’s interest to put up with them.

The queen is standing in the inner court. Nobody sent for her. The king’s on his throne, looking straight at the entrance.

At the dinner, over the wine, he asked her again. What’s your request? Up to half the kingdom. Her answer: come to another dinner tomorrow, you and Haman, and then I’ll tell you.

The king asked who’s in the court. Haman, just come into the outer court. Bring him in, the king says.

The king: hurry. Take the robe and the horse and do exactly that for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Don’t leave anything out.

Mordecai’s been brought in to the king. The king took back his signet ring from Haman, and he’s given it to Mordecai.
