A day in Capernaum

Fishermen leave their nets, an evil spirit is told to be quiet in the synagogue, a whole town turns up at one door, and four friends go through a roof.

How Story is made

Galilee, after John’s arrest

News from down south. John the Baptist has been arrested. The man half the country walked out to the Jordan to hear.

Replying to @capernaum.beach

Heard. And the teacher from Nazareth, the one John baptised, has moved here. To Capernaum.

Capernaum, up by the lake, the old land of Zebulun and Naphtali. Isaiah wrote about this exact corner of the map: the people living in darkness have seen a great light.

By the lake

Someone on the beach at Capernaum@capernaum.beach · Sea of Galilee

Simon and Andrew are out throwing their net off the shore. Normal day.

Replying to @capernaum.beach

Hang on. The teacher from Nazareth’s just walked up and said something to them. They’ve dropped the net. They’re going with him?

Simon Peter@simonpeter · Sea of Galilee

He said “Follow me.” Said he’d make us fishers of people. So, yeah. We went. The nets are wherever we left them.

Andrew@andrew

Replying to @simonpeter

Me too. Andrew. His brother.

Zebedee@zebedee.boats · Sea of Galilee

In the boat with my boys and the hired men, mending nets. The Nazareth teacher comes along the shore and calls James and John. They climb out and go with him. I’m still sitting here.

Replying to @zebedee.boats

So. Do we still finish these nets or not?

Mark@mark · Capernaum

Then they all head into Capernaum, and on the Sabbath, first thing, he’s in the synagogue teaching. Immediately. You’ll notice I like that word.

Sabbath morning, the synagogue

Someone in the synagogue at Capernaum@capernaum.synagogue · Synagogue in Capernaum

Sabbath, our weekly day of rest, and the synagogue’s full. The new teacher from Nazareth is teaching this morning.

Someone in the synagogue at Capernaum@capernaum.synagogue · Synagogue in Capernaum

He doesn’t teach like our teachers of the law. They tell you what the great teachers before them said. He just tells you. Like it’s his to say.

A teacher of the law in Capernaum@teacheroflaw.capernaum

Replying to @capernaum.synagogue

We teach what has been handed down to us. That is rather the point.

Someone in the crowd in Capernaum@crowd.capernaum · Synagogue in Capernaum

A man’s just started shouting in the middle of the synagogue. It’s an evil spirit. It’s yelling at Jesus, asking what he wants with them. Has he come to destroy them?

Replying to @crowd.capernaum

It knows who he is. It called him the Holy One of God.

The man in the synagogue@capernaum.freed · Synagogue in Capernaum

Everyone keeps asking if I’m hurt. Thrown on the floor in front of the whole synagogue, and there isn’t a mark on me.

The crowds@thecrowds · Synagogue in Capernaum

What is this? A new teaching, with real authority. He gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him.

Replying to @thecrowds

Nobody’s moved. Everyone’s just turning to the person next to them, asking the same thing.

Sabbath, after the synagogue

Andrew@andrew · Capernaum

Back to ours after the synagogue. Simon’s and mine. James and John came too. And him.

Simon Peter@simonpeter · Capernaum

My mother-in-law’s in bed with a fever. Proper bad one. We told him about her as soon as we got in.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @simonpeter

He went in, took her hand and helped her up. The fever’s gone.

Simon’s mother-in-law@simonsmotherinlaw · Capernaum

Right. I’m up. Who’s hungry?

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @simonsmotherinlaw

A minute ago she couldn’t get out of bed.

Luke@luke

I asked about this one. He stood over her and ordered the fever out, the way he’d ordered the spirit out in the synagogue. And she got up that minute and started serving them.

Simon’s mother-in-law@simonsmotherinlaw · CapernaumRight. I’m up. Who’s hungry?
Someone on the beach at Capernaum@capernaum.beach · Capernaum

Wasn’t at the synagogue this morning. Already heard about it three times.

Mark@mark

Replying to @capernaum.beach

It spread fast. Soon it was all over Galilee.

Sabbath, sunset

Simon and Andrew’s neighbour@capernaum.nextdoor · Capernaum

Sun’s going down. Sabbath’s over. And people are coming up our street from every direction, bringing their sick.

Luke@luke · Capernaum

He puts his hands on each one. Every single person they bring to him, one at a time. And heals them.

Replying to @luke

I know half the people in this queue. I know what’s wrong with them. Knew.

Someone in the crowd in Capernaum@crowd.capernaum · Capernaum

Evil spirits coming out of people, shouting that he’s the Son of God. He tells them off and won’t let them say another word.

Replying to @crowd.capernaum

Same as this morning. They know who he is.

Isaiah: he took our weaknesses and carried our diseases.

Luke@luke · CapernaumHe puts his hands on each one. Every single person they bring to him, one at a time. And heals them.
Simon and Andrew’s neighbour@capernaum.nextdoor · Capernaum

Lived on this street all my life. Never seen it like tonight.

Next morning, before dawn

Simon Peter@simonpeter · Capernaum

Anyone seen Jesus? Still dark, and he’s gone.

Replying to @simonpeter

No. But people are already turning up at your door asking for him.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Found him. Out on his own in a quiet place, praying. Told him everyone’s looking for him.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @simonpeter

His answer: let’s go on to the other towns nearby so he can preach there too. That’s what he came for.

Show 1 more reply

Walked out at first light to find him. Half of Capernaum did. We asked him to stay.

Luke@luke

Replying to @crowd.capernaum

He told them he had to take the good news of God’s kingdom to the other towns as well. That’s what he was sent to do.

Around Galilee

Mark@mark · Galilee

So off they go round Galilee. Synagogue after synagogue, town after town. Preaching, and driving out evil spirits.

The crowds@thecrowds · Galilee

Followed him from our town to the next one. We’re not the only ones. There are people here from Jerusalem, from Judea, from across the Jordan.

Someone in a town in Galilee@galilee.town · One of the towns in Galilee

Nobody goes near a man with leprosy. And a man covered in it has just walked right up to the teacher in the middle of town.

A man with leprosy@madeclean · One of the towns in Galilee

Got down on my face in front of him. Said: if you want to, you can make me clean.

He touched me.

Replying to @madeclean

Then: I want to. Be clean. And it’s gone. All of it.

Show 2 more replies

He told me not to tell anyone. Just go and show myself to the priest, and make the offering Moses set out, as proof to them.

An Israelite at the tent@israelite.at.the.tentWhen someone’s healed, the priest goes out of the camp to them. And one of the two birds is let go over the fields. It just flies off.

Replying to @madeclean

So anyway. I’ve told everyone.

Mark@mark · Galilee

Result: Jesus can’t walk into a town openly any more. He stays out in the countryside. And people still come out to him from everywhere.

Luke@luke

Replying to @mark

And he keeps slipping away to quiet places to pray.

The crowds@thecrowds

Walked out to the middle of nowhere to find him. Got there and half of Galilee had had the same idea.

A few days later, back in Capernaum

Simon and Andrew’s neighbour@capernaum.nextdoor · Capernaum

He’s back! Jesus is home in Capernaum. Word’s going round the whole town.

Replying to @capernaum.nextdoor

Already know. Half my customers have gone to find him.

Someone in the crowd in Capernaum@crowd.capernaum · Capernaum

Squeezed into the house where he’s teaching. There is no room. None. People are standing outside the door as well.

Someone stuck outside@cantgetin · Capernaum

Can’t even get to the door. I can hear him, I think. Mostly I can see the backs of a lot of heads.

Replying to @cantgetin

You got closer than me.

Luke@luke · Capernaum

A detail I found: Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting in there too. Not just local ones. They’d come from every village in Galilee, from Judea, from Jerusalem. And God’s power was with him to heal.

Replying to @luke

Came all the way from Jerusalem to hear this teacher for ourselves.

New plan. The roof.

Someone in the crowd in Capernaum@crowd.capernaum · Capernaum

Something is happening to the ceiling. Right above Jesus. Someone’s up there taking it apart.

Replying to @crowd.capernaum

There’s a hole. There’s daylight. There are faces looking down.

Got the tiles up, made a gap, and let him down on his mat. Right into the middle, in front of Jesus.

I’m the one on the mat.

Someone in the crowd in Capernaum@crowd.capernaum · Capernaum

He looked at the man on the mat and said: take heart, son. Your sins are forgiven.

Wait, what did he say? What’s happening?

Someone in the synagogue at Capernaum@capernaum.synagogue · Capernaum

The teachers of the law sitting in there have gone very, very quiet.

Replying to @capernaum.synagogue

He’s just turned to them and asked why they’re thinking these things. None of them had said anything.

Replying to @tookmymat

So I got up.

Someone in the crowd in Capernaum@crowd.capernaum · Capernaum

Dude just stood up, picked up his mat and walked out. Past all of us.

Someone stuck outside@cantgetin · Capernaum

He’s just come out of the door. On his own feet. Carrying the mat.

Replying to @cantgetin

That’s our friend.

The crowds@thecrowds · Capernaum

We have never seen anything like this.

Replying to @thecrowds

Everyone’s praising God. Everyone. Inside and out.

I didn’t say a word in there. Not one. I only thought it: that’s blasphemy, only God can forgive sins. And he knew.

Home. Walked the whole way, carrying my own mat, praising God.

Replying to @tookmymat

We carried him there. He carried it home.

Then he went out by the lake again, and stopped at a tax collector’s booth.
