One night on the lake

Bad news about John, a boat to nowhere, five loaves on a green hillside, and a long night rowing against the wind.

How Story is made

Galilee, that week

Someone in Galilee@someone.in.galilee · Galilee

Everyone’s got a theory about the teacher from Nazareth. John the Baptist back from the dead. Elijah. One of the old prophets. Take your pick.

The crowds@thecrowds

Replying to @someone.in.galilee

Elijah. Has to be.

John’s disciples@johnsdisciples

We buried John. Herod had him killed in prison. We’ve gone to tell Jesus.

The crowds@thecrowds

Replying to @johnsdisciples

Half the country walked out to the Jordan to hear that man.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

All twelve of us back with him. Sent out in twos, and now we’re all telling him everything we did and said out there.

The believers@thebelieversUpdate: it worked. Evil spirits driven out, sick people anointed with oil and healed.
Andrew@andrew

Replying to @simonpeter

Also: people haven’t stopped coming and going all day. None of us has had a chance to eat. Starving.

Matthew@matthew

He’s heard about John. He wants to get away by boat, somewhere nobody is.

Out on the boat

Simon Peter@simonpeter · Sea of Galilee

Pushing off. Him, us, one boat, and nobody else. Finally.

Someone who ran round the lake@ranroundthelake · Sea of Galilee

That’s his boat. The teacher’s. Heading off along the shore, away from town. Everyone on the beach has seen it.

Replying to @ranroundthelake

We’re going round on foot. All of us.

John@johnzebedee

Passover’s not far off, so it’s spring. The grass on these hills is green.

Ran the whole way round. We got here first. Their boat’s only just coming in.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @ranroundthelake

You are joking. So much for quiet.

The far shore

Mark@mark

He steps off the boat and sees them all. His heart goes out to them. They’re like sheep with no shepherd. So instead of resting, he starts teaching.

Luke@luke

Worth saying: he welcomed them. Then he talked to them about God’s kingdom and healed everyone who needed it.

Came out here sick. Not sick any more.

Replying to @healedbythelake

Saw it. And the man next to you. And the one behind him.

Philip@philip

He’s gone up the hillside and sat down with us. Every time I look up there are more people coming.

He’s been teaching all afternoon. Nobody’s moved. Nobody wants to.

Late in the day

Philip@philip

Dude. He just asked me where we can buy bread for all these people. Me.

Philip@philip

Replying to @philip

Did the maths anyway. Two hundred denarii wouldn’t get everyone even a small piece.

The believers@thebelievers

It’s getting late and we’re in the middle of nowhere. Told him to send everyone off to the villages round here to buy themselves food.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @thebelievers

His answer: “You give them something to eat.” Us.

Andrew@andrew

Found a boy here with five barley loaves and two small fish. That’s the lot. What’s that among this many?

Replying to @andrew

Five loaves. Two fish. It’s all I’ve got.

Show 1 more reply
Luke@luke

Then he told the Twelve to get everyone sitting down in groups of about fifty.

Mark@mark

Replying to @luke

Groups of hundreds and fifties, all over the green grass.

The crowds@thecrowds

Everyone’s down on the grass. Thousands of us. Waiting to see what happens.

Supper on the grass

Matthew@matthew

He took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven and blessed them. Broke the bread. Handed it to us to take round.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Up the hill, down the hill. Row after row. Everybody’s getting some. Fish as well.

James@jameszebedee

Replying to @simonpeter

I’ve lost count of how many rows.

Everyone on this hill is eating my five loaves.

Replying to @fiveloaves

My children say thank you.

Everyone’s eaten. Everyone. I’m actually full.

Replying to @wasthere

Ran round a whole lake and got dinner for it. Literally.

Show 1 more reply
The believers@thebelievers

He’s told us to gather up what’s left so nothing gets wasted. Twelve baskets. Twelve.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @thebelievers

I carried one.

Matthew@matthew

About five thousand men ate. That’s not counting the women and children.

Replying to @matthew

Not counting us. We ate too.

Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves, and there was some left over. Today: five barley loaves, five thousand men, twelve baskets left.

Elisha's attendant@elishas.attendantA man from Baal-shalishah brought twenty barley loaves from the first of his harvest. Elisha said give it to the people. I said: how am I meant to put twenty loaves in front of a hundred men? He said the LORD says they’ll eat and have some left over. They ate. There was some left over.

Getting dark

Replying to @someone.in.galilee

The Prophet they mean: Moses said God would one day send a prophet like him.

The crowds@thecrowds

Make him king. Tonight. Whether he wants it or not.

Replying to @thecrowds

There’s enough of us here to do it.

Show 1 more reply
Simon Peter@simonpeter

He’s made us get in the boat and go on ahead to the other side. Without him. He’s staying to send everyone home.

The believers@thebelievers

Replying to @simonpeter

How’s he getting across, then?

Show 1 more reply

He’s sending everyone home. Picking up the children. Long walk back.

John@johnzebedee

He knew they were about to come and take him and make him king. So he went off up the mountain again. On his own.

Mark@mark

Up the mountain to pray. Night falls. Him alone on the land, them in the middle of the lake.

Night, on the lake

John@johnzebedee · Sea of Galilee

Dark now, and he still hasn’t come to us. Wind’s getting up. Heading for Capernaum.

Simon Peter@simonpeter · Sea of Galilee

Wind’s straight against us. Rowing hard and getting nowhere.

Andrew@andrew

Replying to @simonpeter

Waves battering the boat.

The believers@thebelievers

Hours of this.

John@johnzebedee

Three, maybe four miles out. Still dark.

Mark@mark

From the land, he can see them straining at the oars.

Between three and six in the morning

Matthew@matthew

The fourth watch. The last stretch of the night, somewhere between three and six. Still out there.

Andrew@andrew

There’s something out there. On the water. Walking.

The believers@thebelievers

Replying to @andrew

It’s a ghost!

Show 2 more replies
John@johnzebedee

It’s him. He called across the water: “Take courage. It’s me.” And: “Don’t be afraid.”

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Shouted across to him: if it’s really you, tell me to come to you. On the water.

Liked by Jesus

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @simonpeter

He said one word. “Come.”

John@johnzebedee

Peter’s out of the boat. He’s walking on the water. Towards Jesus.

Matthew@matthew

Replying to @johnzebedee

He’s actually doing it.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Saw the wind. Got scared. Started going under. Lord, save me!

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @simonpeter

Jesus reached out his hand and grabbed him. Just like that.

Matthew@matthew

They’ve climbed into the boat together. And the wind’s just stopped.

The believers@thebelievers

You really are the Son of God. All of us said it.

Matthew@matthew

Replying to @thebelievers

All of us, down on our knees in the bottom of the boat.

Mark@mark

They were completely stunned. They still hadn’t understood about the loaves. Their hearts had gone hard.

Dawn

John@johnzebedee

We took him into the boat, and the next thing, we were at the shore. Where we’d been heading.

Mark@mark · Gennesaret

Across, and in at Gennesaret. Boat tied up.

Someone at Gennesaret@gennesaret · Gennesaret

Boat just came in. Is that... It’s him. The teacher. Go and get everyone. Bring the sick.

Replying to @gennesaret

They’re carrying people down on mats from all over.

Show 1 more reply

Here too. Everyone who touches the edge of his cloak is well.

The crowds@thecrowds · GennesaretWe just want to touch the edge of his cloak. Everyone who has is well.
Simon Peter@simonpeter

That was me. I asked him to tell me to come, and he did. I walked on the water. Then I saw the wind, got scared and sank. He caught me.

Simon Peter@simonpeterShouted across to him: if it’s really you, tell me to come to you. On the water.
Andrew@andrew

Replying to @simonpeter

Only one of us got out of the boat, though.

Next morning, the far shore

Morning, and we’re still on this side. There was only one boat here last night, and his followers left in it without him. So where is he?

Replying to @fromthecrowd

He’s not here. None of them are.

Show 2 more replies

Next morning

Next day in Capernaum, the crowd caught up with him. He told them he is the bread of life.
