Bad news in the village. Lazarus is ill. Martha and Mary’s brother. Bethany’s small. Everyone knows them.
At this time a man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
A friend falls ill, a message goes out across the Jordan, and four days later a village outside Jerusalem sees something nobody can stop talking about.
Quick catch-up. Last time we were in Jerusalem the leaders picked up stones to throw at him, and he slipped away from them. So we’re back across the Jordan, where John used to baptise. The crowds have followed us out here anyway.
At this, the Jews again picked up stones to stone Him. At this, they tried again to seize Him, but He escaped their grasp. Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had first been baptizing, and He stayed there. Many came to Him and said, “Although John never performed a sign, everything he said about this man was true.”

Came all the way out past the Jordan with a message from the sisters in Bethany. Their brother Lazarus is ill. He heard me out. This illness won’t end in death, he said. It’s for God’s glory, so the Son of God gets glory through it.

Lazarus has died. They’ve laid him in the tomb outside the village. A cave, with a big stone across the front.

Walked out from Jerusalem to be with Martha and Mary. It’s not even two miles. The house is full of people who’ve come to do the same.
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, a little less than two miles away, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them in the loss of their brother.

His answer: there are twelve hours of daylight. Walk in the day and you don’t stumble. It’s walking at night that trips you up.
Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world. But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he has no light.”
Then he says our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, and he’s going to wake him up. We said, Lord, if he’s sleeping, he’ll get better. That’s good news, surely?

He said this to me, on the road outside our village. Then he asked me straight: do you believe this? Yes, Lord. I believe you’re the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was coming into the world.

Then he called out, loud: Lazarus, come out!
