How long, LORD? Are you going to forget me for ever? How long are you going to hide your face? How long do I carry this, sad every single day?
PSALM 13:1–2 · BSB
For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart each day? How long will my enemy dominate me?
Up all night with it. Will the Lord reject us for ever? Has his love run out? Has God forgotten how to be kind?
PSALM 77:4; PSALM 77:7–9 · BSB
You have kept my eyes from closing; I am too troubled to speak. “Will the Lord spurn us forever and never show His favor again? Is His loving devotion gone forever? Has His promise failed for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has His anger shut off His compassion?” Selah
I go east, he isn’t there. West, and I can’t find him. But he knows the way I’ve taken. When he’s tested me, I’ll come out like gold.
JOB 23:8–10 · BSB
If I go east, He is not there, and if I go west, I cannot find Him. When He is at work in the north, I cannot behold Him; when He turns to the south, I cannot see Him. Yet He knows the way I have taken; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
As a deer pants for streams of water, that's how I long for you, God. When can I go and stand in front of him?
PSALM 42:1–2 · BSB
For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and appear in God’s presence?
How long, LORD? I keep shouting for help and you don’t listen. I keep crying “Violence!” and you don’t save anyone. Why make me watch all this? Fighting everywhere. The law’s gone limp, and justice never wins.
HABAKKUK 1:2–4 · BSB
How long, O LORD, must I call for help but You do not hear, or cry out to You, “Violence!” but You do not save? Why do You make me see iniquity? Why do You tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me. Strife is ongoing, and conflict abounds. Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.
He answered. Look round at the nations and be amazed, he said. I’m doing something in your days you wouldn’t believe even if you were told. I’m raising up the Babylonians.
HABAKKUK 1:5–6 · BSB
“Look at the nations and observe—be utterly astounded! For I am doing a work in your days that you would never believe even if someone told you. For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans—that ruthless and impetuous nation which marches through the breadth of the earth to seize dwellings not their own.
Storm on the lake. Waves coming over the side. Boat filling up. And he’s in the back, asleep on a cushion. Honestly.
MARK 4:35–38 · BSB
When that evening came, He said to His disciples, “Let us cross to the other side.” After they had dismissed the crowd, they took Jesus with them, since He was already in the boat. And there were other boats with Him. Soon a violent windstorm came up, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was being swamped. But Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke Him and said, “Teacher, don’t You care that we are perishing?”
We woke him. Don’t you care that we’re drowning? He told the wind off, said to the sea, “Quiet. Be still.” Dead calm. Then asked why we were so afraid.
MARK 4:38–40 · BSB
But Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke Him and said, “Teacher, don’t You care that we are perishing?” Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea. “Silence!” He commanded. “Be still!” And the wind died down, and it was perfectly calm. “Why are you so afraid?” He asked. “Do you still have no faith?”

Not every prayer here ends on a high note. Some of them just end.
My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I cry out all day and you don't answer. All night too.
PSALM 22:1–2 · BSB
For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Doe of the Dawn.” A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from saving me, so far from my words of groaning? I cry out by day, O my God, but You do not answer, and by night, but I have no rest.
They look at me and laugh. If he trusts the LORD so much, they say, let the LORD rescue him. They've pierced my hands and my feet. They're throwing dice for my clothes.
PSALM 22:7–8; PSALM 22:16–18 · BSB
All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads: “He trusts in the LORD, let the LORD deliver him; let the LORD rescue him, since He delights in him.” For dogs surround me; a band of evil men encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet. I can count all my bones; they stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.
But if I say I’ll never mention him again, never speak in his name, it’s like a fire shut up in my bones. I’m worn out holding it in. I can’t.
JEREMIAH 20:9 · BSB
If I say, “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name,” His message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones, and I become weary of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.
Honest post. I nearly lost my footing. I was jealous of arrogant people, watching them do well. Not a care in the world, and getting richer.
PSALM 73:2–3; PSALM 73:12 · BSB
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. Behold, these are the wicked—always carefree as they increase their wealth.

Ran for my life. Left my servant in Beersheba and walked a day out into the desert. Sat down under a broom bush. I’ve had enough, LORD. Take my life. I’m no better than my ancestors.
1 KINGS 19:3–4 · BSB
And Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
Fell asleep. Something touched me: an angel. Get up and eat. By my head, bread baked on hot coals and a jar of water. Ate, lay down again. Again: get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you. That food kept me going forty days and forty nights, all the way to Horeb, the mountain of God.
1 KINGS 19:5–8 · BSB
Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” And he looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
Day and night I cry out to you, LORD. My life is close to the grave. You've taken my friends away. Darkness is my closest friend.
PSALM 88:1; PSALM 88:3; PSALM 88:18 · BSB
A song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choirmaster. According to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD, the God of my salvation, day and night I cry out before You. For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. You have removed my beloved and my friend; darkness is my closest companion.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has put eternity in our hearts. And we still can’t work out what God is doing from beginning to end.
ECCLESIASTES 3:11 · BSB
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.
He’s calling Elijah. Someone ran and put a sponge of sour wine on a stick to give him a drink. The rest said: leave him. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.
MATTHEW 27:47–49 · BSB
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He is calling Elijah.” One of them quickly ran and brought a sponge. He filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and held it up for Jesus to drink. But the others said, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him.”
3Not sure it's true
Even the people closest to it had their doubts, and said so.
I wasn't there when he came. Now they keep telling me they've seen the Lord. Not believing it till I see the nail marks in his hands and put my hand into his side.
JOHN 20:24–25 · BSB
Now Thomas called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”
We're not making it up, Thomas. We've seen the Lord.
JOHN 20:25 · BSB
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”
Asked Jesus to help my son if he could. He threw it straight back: “If you can?” Said anything is possible for someone who believes. I cried out: I believe. Help me with my unbelief.
MARK 9:22–24 · BSB
“It often throws him into the fire or into the water, trying to kill him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” “If You can?” echoed Jesus. “All things are possible to him who believes!” Immediately the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”
The spirit left. My boy lay so still people said he was dead. Jesus took his hand and lifted him up.
MARK 9:25–27 · BSB
When Jesus saw that a crowd had come running, He rebuked the unclean spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” He said, “I command you to come out and never enter him again.” After shrieking and convulsing him violently, the spirit came out. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.
John sent us from prison with one question: are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?
MATTHEW 11:2–3 · BSB
Meanwhile John heard in prison about the works of Christ, and he sent his disciples to ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
His answer: go and tell John what you see. The blind see, the lame walk, the dead are raised, the poor hear good news.
MATTHEW 11:4–5 · BSB
Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
And Abraham and Sarah were already old and well along in years; Sarah had passed the age of childbearing. So she laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
He asked why I laughed. Is anything too hard for the LORD? I got scared and said I didn’t laugh. He said no, I did.
GENESIS 18:13–15 · BSB
And the LORD asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Can I really bear a child when I am old?’ Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you—in about a year—and Sarah will have a son.” But Sarah was afraid, so she denied it and said, “I did not laugh.” “No,” replied the LORD, “but you did laugh.”
Threshing wheat in a winepress so the Midianites won't see. A stranger under our oak says: “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” Me?
JUDGES 6:11–12 · BSB
Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon and said, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.”
Asked him: if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh and I'm the least in my family. He just said he'd be with me.
JUDGES 6:13–16 · BSB
“Please, my Lord,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of Midian.” The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Am I not sending you?” “Please, my Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I save Israel? Indeed, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.” “Surely I will be with you,” the LORD replied, “and you will strike down all the Midianites as one man.”
Walking home to Emmaus this afternoon. Some of the women say they went to the tomb early, found it empty, and saw angels who said he's alive. A few of ours went and checked. Empty, just like they said. But him they didn't see.
That same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. Furthermore, some of our women astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, but they did not find His body. They came and told us they had seen a vision of angels, who said that Jesus was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had described. But Him they did not see.”
Then a stranger falls in with us and asks what we're talking about. We just stopped. You could see it on our faces. Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know? Jesus of Nazareth. We had hoped he was the one who'd set Israel free. And now it's the third day.
LUKE 24:15–21 · BSB
And as they talked and deliberated, Jesus Himself came up and walked along with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” They stood still, with sadness on their faces. One of them, named Cleopas, asked Him, “Are You the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?” “What things?” He asked. “The events involving Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “This man was a prophet, powerful in speech and action before God and all the people. Our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to the sentence of death, and they crucified Him. But we were hoping He was the One who would redeem Israel. And besides all this, it is the third day since these things took place.
Same house. Doors locked again. And he’s here. He said to me: put your finger here, look at my hands. Put your hand in my side. Stop doubting and believe.
Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Middle of the night, and he comes walking to us across the lake. We thought it was a ghost. “It’s me. Don’t be afraid.” So I said, if it’s you, tell me to come. He said, “Come.” I got out of the boat.
MATTHEW 14:25–29 · BSB
During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus spoke up at once: “Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.” “Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come to You on the water.” “Come,” said Jesus. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
And I walked. On the water. Honestly. Then I saw the wind and started to sink. Shouted for him to save me. He grabbed me. Asked why I doubted. Such little faith.
MATTHEW 14:29–31 · BSB
“Come,” said Jesus. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”
Got to the village and he acted like he was going on further. We said stay with us, it’s nearly evening. At the table he took the bread, thanked God, broke it, and gave it to us. And we saw. It was him. And he was gone.
LUKE 24:28–31 · BSB
As they approached the village where they were headed, He seemed to be going farther. But they pleaded with Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them. While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight.
He told me to go and stand on the mountain, because the LORD was about to pass by. A wind that tore the mountains and smashed the rocks. The LORD wasn’t in the wind. Then an earthquake. He wasn’t in the earthquake. Then a fire. He wasn’t in the fire. And after the fire, a still, small voice. I wrapped my face in my cloak and went and stood at the mouth of the cave.
1 KINGS 19:11–13 · BSB
Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Behold, the LORD is about to pass by.” And a great and mighty wind tore into the mountains and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a still, small voice. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
Same question. Same answer from me. He’s sending me back: anoint Hazael king of Aram, Jehu king of Israel, and Elisha son of Shaphat to be prophet after me. And it turns out I’m not the only one left. He’s kept seven thousand in Israel who’ve never bowed to Baal.
1 KINGS 19:14–18 · BSB
“I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.” Then the LORD said to him, “Go back by the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to anoint Hazael as king over Aram. You are also to anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel and Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah to succeed you as prophet. Then Jehu will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Jehu. Nevertheless, I have reserved seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”
When Jacob woke up, he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it.” And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”
Then Jacob makes a vow, and it’s very Jacob. If God stays with me, feeds me, clothes me and gets me home safe, then the LORD will be my God. And he’ll get a tenth.
GENESIS 28:20–22 · BSB
Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey, and if He will provide me with food to eat and clothes to wear, so that I may return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God. And this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give You a tenth.”
Ten chapters, and God isn’t named once. A queen in the right place, a sleepless night, a book read out at the right page, a gallows built for the wrong man. Make of that what you will.
ESTHER 4:14; ESTHER 6:1–2; ESTHER 7:10 · BSB
For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” That night sleep escaped the king; so he ordered the Book of Records, the Chronicles, to be brought in and read to him. And there it was found recorded that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the eunuchs who guarded the king’s entrance, when they had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes. So they hanged Haman on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the fury of the king subsided.
Can a mother forget the baby at her breast? Stop caring for the child she carried? Even if she could, he won’t forget you. He’s written you on the palms of his hands.

Don’t you know? Haven’t you heard? The LORD is the everlasting God. He made the ends of the earth. He never gets tired. He gives strength to people who are worn out.
Even the young get tired and trip and fall. But those who wait for the LORD will get their strength back. They’ll rise up on wings like eagles. They’ll run and not get tired. They’ll walk and not faint.
ISAIAH 40:28–31 · BSB
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary; His understanding is beyond searching out. He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
Where could I go from your Spirit? If I go up to heaven, you're there. If I lie down in the depths, you're there. If I fly off on the wings of the dawn to the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me.
PSALM 139:7–10 · BSB
Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle by the farthest sea, even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.
He made you. He’s bought you back. Don’t be afraid. He’s called you by name: you’re his. When you go through deep water, he’ll be with you. The rivers won’t sweep you away. Walk through the fire and you won’t get burnt.
ISAIAH 43:1–2 · BSB
But now, this is what the LORD says—He who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched; the flames will not set you ablaze.
What can separate us from the love of Christ? Trouble? Hardship? Persecution? Hunger? Danger? The sword?
No. I’m convinced: not death, not life, not angels, not rulers, not what’s happening now, not what’s coming, not any power, not height, not depth, not anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
