Job 1

The book of Job@bookofjob · The land of Uz

Meet Job. He lives in the land of Uz, out east. Blameless, straight, fears God, keeps well clear of evil. Seven sons, three daughters, thousands of sheep and camels, and more servants than you could count. The biggest man in the whole East.

The book of Job@bookofjob

His sons take turns throwing feasts at their houses, and they always invite their three sisters. After every round, Job is up early making a burnt offering for each of his kids. Just in case one of them cursed God in their heart. Every single time.

The book of Job@bookofjob

Now something Job never got to see. The angels come before the LORD, and Satan, the accuser, comes with them. The LORD points to Job: there’s nobody on earth like him. Satan’s answer: “Does Job fear God for nothing?” You’ve put a fence round him and everything he owns. Take it all away and he’ll curse you to your face. The LORD lets him touch everything Job has. Not Job himself.

Oxen ploughing, donkeys grazing next to them. The Sabeans came out of nowhere and took the lot. Killed the other lads. I’m the only one who got away. Ran straight to Job to tell him.

A shepherd of Job’s@jobs.shepherd

Replying to @jobs.ploughman

I got there while he was still telling him. Fire from the sky. The sheep and the shepherds, gone. I’m the only one left.

Four of them. Each one still talking when the next one ran in.

A servant who ploughed Job’s fields@jobs.ploughmanOxen ploughing, donkeys grazing next to them. The Sabeans came out of nowhere and took the lot. Killed the other lads. I’m the only one who got away. Ran straight to Job to tell him.
Job@job

I tore my robe and shaved my head, and I fell on the ground and worshipped. I came into the world with nothing, and I’ll leave with nothing. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Praise the name of the LORD.

Job 2

The book of Job@bookofjob

Back in heaven, another day. The LORD again: Job is still holding on to his integrity, even though Satan talked him into ruining him for no reason. Satan: “Skin for skin.” Strike his body and he’ll curse you to your face. The LORD: he’s in your hands. But spare his life.

The book of Job@bookofjob

Sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Job sits down in the ashes and scrapes himself with a bit of broken pot.

Job’s wife@jobswife

Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die.

Job@job

Replying to @jobswife

You’re talking like a foolish woman. So we take the good from God, but not the bad?

Word gets round. Three of Job’s friends hear what’s happened: Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuah and Zophar from Naamah. They arrange to meet up and go and comfort him together.

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

We saw him from a long way off and could barely recognise him. We just wept. Tore our robes, threw dust in the air over our heads, and sat down on the ground with him. Seven days and seven nights. Nobody said a word. You could see how much pain he was in.

Job 3

Job@job

Wipe out the day I was born. And the night someone said, “It’s a boy.” Why didn’t I die the moment I came out?

Job@job

Replying to @job

In the grave the wicked stop raging, and the worn out finally get some rest.

Job 4

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

Job, can I say something? With respect. You’ve steadied so many people when they were falling. Now it’s you, and you can’t cope.

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

Replying to @eliphaz.of.teman

Think about it. When has an innocent person ever been wiped out? From what I’ve seen, people who plough trouble reap trouble.

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

Something happened to me once, at night, in the deep sleep hours. I was shaking. A spirit slid past my face and every hair on my body stood up. It stood still. I couldn’t make out its shape. Then a whisper: can a human be more right than God?

Job 5

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

People are born for trouble, as surely as sparks fly upwards.

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

Honestly, Job, the person God corrects is better off for it. Don’t brush it off. He wounds, and he bandages. He strikes, and his hands heal.

Job@job

Replying to @eliphaz.of.teman

If you could weigh my grief, it would be heavier than the sand of the sea. No wonder my words have been wild.

Job 6

Job@job

A man in despair should be able to count on his friends. You’re like desert streams. Full in winter, bone dry in the heat, just when someone needs a drink. You saw something terrible and got scared.

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.temanThink about it. When has an innocent person ever been wiped out? From what I’ve seen, people who plough trouble reap trouble.
Job@job

Replying to @job

Teach me, and I’ll shut up. Show me where I went wrong.

Job 7

Job@job

I lie down and think: when will it be morning? The night drags on and I toss and turn till dawn. My days go faster than a weaver’s shuttle, and they’re running out with no hope.

Job@job

What are we, that you make so much of us? That you check on us every morning and test us every moment? Can’t you look away long enough for me to swallow?

Job 8

How long are you going to keep this up? Your words are just a lot of wind. Does God twist justice? Your children sinned against him, and he handed them over to what they’d done.

Replying to @bildad

Ask the people who came before us. Find out what our ancestors learned. We were only born yesterday. We know nothing.

Job 9

Job@job

Yes, I know all that. But how can anyone be in the right with God? You couldn’t answer him once in a thousand times.

Job@job

Replying to @job

He isn’t a man like me, so we can’t just go to court together. There’s nobody to stand between us and put a hand on each of us.

Job 10

Job@job

Your hands shaped me. Now you’ll turn round and destroy me? Remember, you moulded me like clay. Are you going to turn me back into dust?

Job 11

Look. You say your beliefs are sound and you’re clean in God’s sight. I wish God would speak up and tell you a thing or two. Here’s the truth: God is making you pay less than you deserve.

Replying to @zophar

Can you get to the bottom of God? Can you find where the Almighty ends?

Job 12

Job@job

Oh, no doubt you’re the people who know, and wisdom will die with you. I’ve got a brain too. I’m not beneath you. Who doesn’t know all that?

Zophar the Naamathite@zopharLook. You say your beliefs are sound and you’re clean in God’s sight. I wish God would speak up and tell you a thing or two. Here’s the truth: God is making you pay less than you deserve.
Job@job

Ask the animals, they’ll teach you. Ask the birds, the earth, the fish. Which of them doesn’t know the LORD’s hand did this? Every living thing’s life is in his hand.

Job 13

Job@job

You smear over everything with lies. Useless doctors, all of you. If you’d just kept quiet, that would have been wise.

Job@job

Even if he kills me, I’ll still hope in him. And I’ll still argue my case to his face.

Job 14

Job@job

We’re born, we get a few short days, and they’re full of trouble. We bloom like a flower, then wither. Like a shadow, then gone.

Job@job

There’s hope for a tree. Cut it down and it sprouts again. But a man dies, breathes his last, and where is he? If someone dies, will they live again?

Job 15

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

Round two. Does a wise man answer with hot air? Were you the first man ever born? Do you sit in on God’s council?

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

Replying to @eliphaz.of.teman

We’ve got grey hair on our side. Men older than your father.

Job 16

Job@job

I’ve heard all this before. Miserable comforters, the lot of you. I could talk like that too, if you were in my place. But I’d actually try to make you feel better.

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.temanRound two. Does a wise man answer with hot air? Were you the first man ever born? Do you sit in on God’s council?
Job@job

Even now my witness is in heaven. My friends mock me, while my eyes pour out tears to God.

Job 18

How long until you stop? Why do you look at us like we’re cattle? Like we’re stupid?

Replying to @bildad

The wicked man’s lamp goes out. Nobody remembers his name.

Job 19

Job@job

He’s driven my brothers away. My friends have forgotten me. My breath disgusts my wife. My own family can’t stand me.

Job@job

Replying to @job

Skin and bones. I’ve escaped by the skin of my teeth.

Show 1 more reply
Job@job

I wish my words were written down. Carved in rock, for ever. I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end he will stand on the earth. Even after my skin has been destroyed, I will see God. With my own eyes. I long for it so much.

Job 20

Okay, that was an insult, and I can’t sit still. Seriously, don’t you know how it’s always been, ever since the first people lived on earth? The wicked man’s win is short. A godless man’s joy lasts a moment.

Job 21

Job@job

Then why do the wicked live on? Grow old, get more powerful, their homes safe, their kids all round them. They spend their days doing well and go down to the grave in peace.

Zophar the Naamathite@zopharOkay, that was an insult, and I can’t sit still. Seriously, don’t you know how it’s always been, ever since the first people lived on earth? The wicked man’s win is short. A godless man’s joy lasts a moment.
Job@job

Replying to @job

So how can you comfort me with nonsense? Every answer you’ve given is false.

Job 22

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

Let’s be honest. Isn’t your wickedness huge? You took security off your own brothers for no reason. Stripped people of their clothes. No water for the worn out, no bread for the hungry.

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

Replying to @eliphaz.of.teman

Make peace with God, and things will go well for you.

Job 23

Job@job

If only I knew where to find him. I’d go right up to where he sits and lay out my case.

Job@job

Replying to @job

I go east, he isn’t there. West, and I can’t find him. But he knows the way I’ve taken. When he’s tested me, I’ll come out like gold.

Job 25

How can anyone be right with God? Even the moon isn’t bright in his sight, or the stars pure. Much less a man. A maggot. A worm.

The book of Job@bookofjob

Replying to @bildad

That’s Bildad’s whole speech this time. And Zophar doesn’t speak again.

Job 26

Job@job

He hangs the earth on nothing. And that’s just the edges of what he does. All we hear of him is a faint whisper. Who could understand the thunder of his power?

Job 27

Job@job

I will never say you’re right. I’ll hold on to my integrity till I die. As long as I live, my conscience won’t accuse me.

Job 28

Job@job

People dig mine shafts for silver and gold, right down into the dark. But where do you find wisdom? Nobody knows what it’s worth. You won’t find it anywhere in the land of the living.

Job@job

Replying to @job

God knows the way to it. And he told us: fearing the Lord is wisdom. Turning away from evil is understanding.

Job 29

Job@job

How I miss the old days. When God watched over me, when his lamp shone over my head, when the Almighty was still with me and my children were all around me.

Job@job

Replying to @job

I’d walk into the square by the city gate and the young men would step back and the old men would stand up. Because I rescued the poor and the orphans who had no one. I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.

Job 30

Job@job

Now they laugh at me. Men younger than me, whose fathers I wouldn’t have put with my sheepdogs. I’m a joke in their songs.

Job@job

I cry out to you for help, and you don’t answer. I stand up, and you just look at me.

Job 31

Job@job

Have I ever turned away the poor? Eaten my bread on my own and not shared it with an orphan? No traveller ever had to sleep in the street. My door was always open.

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.temanLet’s be honest. Isn’t your wickedness huge? You took security off your own brothers for no reason. Stripped people of their clothes. No water for the worn out, no bread for the hungry.
Job@job

And I never hid my wrongs the way Adam did, keeping my guilt to myself because I was scared of what people would say.

Adam@adamTold him I was scared because I was naked, so I hid. He asked if I’d eaten from the tree. And I blamed her. Said the woman he put here with me gave it to me. I said that. To God. About her.
Job@job

That’s my signature on it. Now let the Almighty answer me.

The book of Job@bookofjob

Replying to @job

That’s the end of Job’s words.

Job 32

The book of Job@bookofjob

The three friends stop answering him. As far as they’re concerned, he thinks he’s in the right.

I’m the youngest here, so I waited while the older men talked. I figured age should do the talking. But they’ve run out of answers, and literally not one of them has proved Job wrong.

Replying to @elihu

I’m about to burst. I’m so full of words. Like new wine sealed in with nowhere to go, about to split a new wineskin.

The book of Job@bookofjob

Elihu son of Barachel. He’s angry with Job for justifying himself instead of God. And angry with the three friends for condemning Job when they couldn’t answer him.

Elihu son of Barachel@elihuI’m the youngest here, so I waited while the older men talked. I figured age should do the talking. But they’ve run out of answers, and literally not one of them has proved Job wrong.

Job 33

God speaks one way, then another, and nobody notices. In a dream. In a vision at night, when deep sleep falls on people.

Job 35

Nobody asks: where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night?

Job 37

My heart’s pounding. Listen to the thunder of his voice. Stop and think about the wonders of God, Job.

Job 38

The book of Job@bookofjob

Then the LORD answers Job. Out of the storm. No explanation. Questions. Brace yourself like a man, he says. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?

The book of Job@bookofjob

Replying to @bookofjob

Some of what he asked Job: 1. Who shut the sea behind doors and told it, this far and no further? 2. Have you ever told the morning when to come? 3. Where does light live? 4. Can you tie up the Pleiades, or undo Orion’s belt? 5. Who feeds the young ravens when they cry out? 6. Did you give the horse its strength? 7. Does the eagle fly up there because you said so?

Job 40

Job@job

I’m nothing. How could I answer you? I’m putting my hand over my mouth. I’ve spoken once, twice. I’ve nothing to add.

The book of Job@bookofjob

Then the LORD tells Job about two huge creatures, Behemoth and Leviathan. Can you catch Leviathan with a fishhook? Nobody dares stir him up. So who can stand up to God? Everything under heaven is his.

Job 42

Job@job

I know you can do anything. I talked about things I didn’t understand. Things too wonderful for me. I’d heard about you. Now I’ve seen you with my own eyes.

Job@jobI wish my words were written down. Carved in rock, for ever. I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end he will stand on the earth. Even after my skin has been destroyed, I will see God. With my own eyes. I long for it so much.
Job@job

Replying to @job

So I despise myself, and I’m turning back to you, here in the dust and ashes.

The book of Job@bookofjob

Then the LORD speaks to Eliphaz. He’s angry with him and his two friends, because they didn’t speak about him accurately, the way his servant Job did. They’re to take seven bulls and seven rams to Job and make an offering. Job will pray for them.

Eliphaz the Temanite@eliphaz.of.teman

Replying to @bookofjob

All three of us went and did exactly what the LORD said. Job prayed for us. The LORD accepted his prayer.

The book of Job@bookofjob

After Job prays for his friends, the LORD restores everything. Twice what he had before.

Job’s sister@jobs.sister

All of us went round to Job’s. His brothers, his sisters, everyone who used to know him. We ate with him and comforted him over everything the LORD had brought on him. Everyone brought a piece of silver and a gold ring.

Job@job

Seven sons and three daughters. The girls are Jemimah, Keziah and Keren-happuch. There aren’t women as beautiful as them anywhere in the land. They’re getting an inheritance, same as their brothers.

The book of Job@bookofjob

Job lives another 140 years and sees four generations of his family. Then he dies, an old man who’d lived a full life.
