Mark 1

Mark@mark

The good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I’m going to tell it fast. It starts with a voice in the desert.

John the Baptist@johnthebaptist · Jordan River

Out by the Jordan. Same message: turn back to God, be baptised, be forgiven. And they keep coming. Jerusalem, the whole of Judea.

Mark@mark

Replying to @johnthebaptist

Worth knowing: he wears camel hair and a leather belt, and lives on locusts and wild honey. Yes. Locusts.

Mark@mark · Jordan River

Jesus comes from Nazareth and John baptises him. As he comes up out of the water the sky tears open, the Spirit comes down on him like a dove, and a voice from heaven tells him he’s God’s Son, loved, and that God is so pleased with him.

Mark@mark

Then forty days in the desert. Satan tempting him. Wild animals. Angels looking after him.

Jesus@jesus · Galilee

The time has come. God’s kingdom is close. Turn back to God, and believe the good news.

Simon Peter@simonpeter · Lake Galilee

He walked up the beach and said “Follow me,” and he’d teach us to fish for people. So Andrew and I left the nets where they were and went. Just like that.

A picture Simon Peter posted
Someone in the crowd in Capernaum@crowd.capernaum · Capernaum

Synagogue, Sabbath. He teaches like he actually has authority, nothing like the teachers of the law. Then a man with an evil spirit starts shouting that he knows who Jesus is. Jesus tells it to be quiet and get out. It goes.

The crowds@thecrowds

Replying to @crowd.capernaum

Seriously, what is this? A new teaching, and with real authority. He gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him.

Simon’s mother-in-law@simonsmotherinlaw · Capernaum

In bed with a fever. He took my hand, helped me up, and it was gone. So up I got and looked after the lot of them.

Mark@mark · Capernaum

Sun goes down, Sabbath over, and the whole town is at the door. Everyone sick, everyone with an evil spirit. He heals loads of them.

A picture Mark posted
Simon Peter@simonpeter

Still dark, and he’d slipped off on his own to pray. We went looking for him. Told him everyone’s after him. His answer: on to the next towns. That’s what he came for.

What happened next: he told me not to tell anyone. I told everyone. Now he can’t even walk into a town openly. He stays out in the countryside, and people come to him from everywhere.

A man with leprosy@madecleanI knelt and told him that if he wanted to, he could make me clean. He touched me. Touched me. “I want to. Be clean.” And I was.

Mark 2

The four who carried him@thefour · Capernaum

Couldn’t get our friend through the door, the house was rammed. So we went up, dug through the roof above Jesus, and lowered him down on his mat.

A picture The four who carried him posted

Replying to @thefour

Jesus saw what we’d done and said to him, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Then: “Get up, take your mat, go home.” He walked out.

Matthew@matthew · By the lake

Sitting at my tax booth by the lake. He was walking past, saw me, and said “Follow me.” So I got up and followed him.

Matthew@matthew · Capernaum

Had Jesus round for dinner. Plus his disciples, plus loads of tax collectors, plus a lot of people everyone calls sinners. Full house.

A Pharisee in Galilee@pharisee.galilee

Kindly note: his disciples are picking grain as they walk through a field. On the Sabbath. That is work, and it is not permitted.

Mark@mark

When the Pharisees complained about the grain, Jesus sent them here. Haven’t you read what David did when he and his men were hungry? He went into the house of God and ate the holy bread, which only the priests were allowed to eat.

Ahimelech@ahimelech.nob · NobDavid turned up here at Nob, where we priests live, on his own. That scared me. The only bread we had was the holy bread from the LORD’s table, so I gave him that. And Goliath’s sword.
Jesus@jesus

The Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath.

Mark 3

Something I left out. Before he healed me, he looked round at all of them. Angry, and upset at how hard their hearts were.

A man with a withered hand@stretchedout · A synagogueSabbath, synagogue, me with a shrivelled hand, and everyone watching him. He told me to stretch it out. I did. It was as good as the other one.
Mark@mark

Replying to @stretchedout

The Pharisees walk out and start planning with Herod’s people how to kill him.

The crowds@thecrowds · Lake Galilee

Some of us came all the way from Idumea to see him. Some from Tyre and Sidon. No joke. He had to keep a boat ready so we wouldn’t crush him.

Mark@mark

Jesus’ family@hisfamily

He’s out of his mind. The crowds are so big he can’t even eat. We’re going to go and bring him home.

Mark@mark

Replying to @hisfamily

His mother and brothers get there and stand outside. They send someone in to call him. He looks round at the people sitting in a circle around him. Here are my mother and my brothers, he says. Whoever does what God wants is my brother and sister and mother.

We came down from Jerusalem to look into this. Our finding: he is possessed by Beelzebul. That is how he drives out spirits.

Mark 4

Jesus@jesus · Lake Galilee

A farmer went out to sow. Some seed fell on the path, some on rock, some among thorns. Some fell on good soil and gave a crop: thirty, sixty, a hundred times over. If you’ve got ears, listen.

No because there were so many of us he had to teach from a boat.

Storm on the lake. Waves coming over the side. Boat filling up. And he’s in the back, asleep on a cushion. Honestly.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @simonpeter

We woke him. Don’t you care that we’re drowning? He told the wind off, said to the sea, “Quiet. Be still.” Dead calm. Then asked why we were so afraid.

The believers@thebelievers

Genuine question. Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him.

Mark 5

The pig herders@gadarenepigs · Region of the Gerasenes

About two thousand pigs just ran down the bank into the lake and drowned. All of them. Because of that Jesus bloke.

The pig herders@gadarenepigs

Replying to @gadarenepigs

And the man from the tombs, the one nobody could chain, is sitting there dressed and in his right mind. People are scared. They’ve asked Jesus to leave.

The man from the tombs@nolongerlegion · The Decapolis

Begged to go with him. He said go home and tell your people how much the Lord has done for you, and how kind he’s been to you. So I’m telling everyone in the Ten Towns.

Jairus@jairus

My little girl is dying. I fell at his feet and begged. He’s coming with me.

Twelve years of bleeding. Every doctor. Every penny. Only got worse. So I touched his cloak in the crowd, and I felt it stop.

The believers@thebelievers

Then he stops and asks who touched him. In a crowd that’s literally pushing against him.

Jesus@jesus

These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

Jesus@jesus

Nothing that goes into you from outside can make you unclean. It’s what comes out of the heart.

Mark@mark · The Decapolis

Some people bring him a man who’s deaf and can hardly speak. He takes him away from the crowd. Fingers in his ears, a touch on his tongue, a look up to heaven, a deep sigh. “Ephphatha.” Be opened. He can hear, and talks plainly.

The crowds@thecrowds

Replying to @mark

He told us not to tell anyone. We told everyone. He does everything well.

Mark 8

A blind man from Bethsaida@treeswalking · Bethsaida

Some people brought me to him in Bethsaida. He took my hand and led me out of the village. Spat on my eyes, put his hands on me, and asked if I could see anything. People, I said. But they look like trees walking about. He put his hands on my eyes again. Now I can see everything clearly.

Mark 9

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Simon Peter@simonpeter · A high mountainUp a high mountain with James and John. His face shone like the sun. Moses and Elijah were there, talking with him. I offered to put up three shelters. Seemed like the thing to say.
John@johnzebedee

Anyone know what “rising from the dead” means? Can’t say why I’m asking.

A father@helpmyunbelief

The believers@thebelievers · Capernaum

He asked what we’d been arguing about on the road. Nobody said a word. It was about which of us is the greatest.

Jesus@jesus

Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of everyone.

Mark@mark

Replying to @jesus

Then he took a little child in his arms.

John@johnzebedee

Saw a man driving out spirits in his name. Told him to stop, he isn’t one of us. Jesus said don’t. Whoever isn’t against us is for us.

Jesus@jesus

If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. Better to go into life missing a hand than to go into hell with two.

Mark 10

Mark@mark

When the disciples sent the children away, he was angry. Then he took them in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.

Matthew@matthewPeople brought their children for him to bless. We told them off. Wrong call. He said to let the little children come to him. The kingdom of heaven belongs to people like them.
Mark@mark

He ran up and knelt in front of him. And before Jesus told him to sell everything, he looked at him and loved him.

A rich young man@whatdoistilllackAsked him what I was still missing. He said sell everything, give it to the poor, and follow him. I went away sad. I have a lot.
Mark@mark

The chief priests hear, and start looking for a way to kill him. They’re afraid of him. The crowd loves his teaching.

Jesus@jesus

Have faith in God. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them.

Mark 12

Mark@mark

When the Sadducees tried to catch him out on the resurrection, he took them to the burning bush. God told Moses he’s the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. So he isn’t the God of the dead. He’s the God of the living.

Moses@mosesGod called my name from inside it. Told me to take off my sandals, because the ground I was standing on was holy. I hid my face. I was afraid to look at God.
Mark@mark

Asked which commandment matters most, he started with Moses: listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one and only Lord. Love him with everything you’ve got: heart, soul, mind and strength. Then: love your neighbour as yourself.

Moses@mosesListen, Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength.

I put this question to him. He is right. That matters more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices. He told me I am not far from God’s kingdom.

Mark@markAsked which commandment matters most, he started with Moses: listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the one and only Lord. Love him with everything you’ve got: heart, soul, mind and strength. Then: love your neighbour as yourself.

Mark 13

Mark@mark · Mount of Olives

Mark 14

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Matthew@matthewJesus told you that before the rooster crows, you’ll deny him three times.
Mark@mark · Gethsemane

In Gethsemane he’s deeply distressed. Tells them he’s so full of sorrow it could kill him. He falls to the ground and prays. Abba, Father, you can do anything. Take this cup away from me. But not what I want. What you want.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @mark

He asked us to keep watch. We fell asleep. Three times. He asked me straight out if I couldn’t stay awake for one hour.

Mark@mark · Gethsemane

He’s still speaking when Judas, one of the Twelve, turns up with a crowd carrying swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders. Judas walks straight up to him, says “Rabbi!” and kisses him. They grab Jesus and arrest him.

Mark@mark

Replying to @mark

The kiss was the signal. He’d told them beforehand: the one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and take him away under guard.

The believers@thebelievers

We all left him and ran.

Mark@mark · Gethsemane

The high priest asked if he was the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One. His answer started with two words: “I am.”

Matthew@matthew · Caiaphas’ houseAt Caiaphas’ house they’re hunting for false evidence. Nothing holds. Jesus says nothing. Then Caiaphas puts him under oath: are you the Christ, the Son of God? “You have said so.” And he tells them that from now on they’ll see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.

Mark 15

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate · Jerusalem

I asked him if he is the king of the Jews. “You have said so.” Then nothing. Not one word, whatever the charge. I confess I was amazed.

Mark@mark · Jerusalem

Every Passover Pilate lets one prisoner go, whoever the crowd asks for. There’s a man called Barabbas in prison with the rebels who committed murder in the uprising. Pilate offers them the King of the Jews. The chief priests get the crowd shouting for Barabbas instead. What should I do with Jesus, then? Crucify him. Why, what has he done wrong? They just shout louder.

Mark@mark

Replying to @mark

He wanted to keep the crowd happy. So he let Barabbas go, had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

Simon of Cyrene@simonofcyrene · Jerusalem

Simon, from Cyrene. Alexander and Rufus’s dad. I was coming in from the country. The soldiers made me carry his cross.

Mark@mark · Golgotha

Golgotha, the Place of the Skull. Nine in the morning. They crucify him, and throw dice for his clothes. The charge above him: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Mark@mark · Golgotha

At three he cries out, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” It means: my God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Then a loud cry, and he dies.

The centurion@centurionatthecross · Golgotha

I was standing right in front of him when he died. This man really was the Son of God.

Joseph of Arimathea@josephofarimathea

Evening, and the Sabbath about to start. I went to Pilate and asked for his body. He was surprised he was already dead and called the centurion in to check. Then he let me have him. I bought linen, took him down, wrapped him, laid him in a tomb cut in the rock and rolled a stone across the entrance.

Mary Magdalene@marymagdalene · Golgotha

We were there. Watching from a distance. Salome, the other Mary, me, and many women who’d followed him from Galilee. Mary and I saw where they laid him.

Mark 16

Mark@mark · The tomb, Jerusalem

Sunday, first light. The women walk to the tomb asking each other who’ll roll the stone away. It’s already rolled back. Inside, a young man in white tells them he’s risen, he isn’t here. Go and tell his disciples, and Peter.

Replying to @mark

They ran from the tomb, trembling, and said nothing to anyone. They were afraid.

Mark@mark

A note before you read on. Some of the oldest copies of this book end there, at verse 8. Others go on with verses 9 to 20. Those verses aren’t in the earliest manuscripts we have, but churches have read them for a very long time, so they’re here too.

Mary Magdalene@marymagdalene
