I’m the one who brought the good news to Colossae. Now I’m with Paul, and I’ve told him all about you, and how much love the Spirit has given you.
COLOSSIANS 1:7–8 · BSB
You learned it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, and who also informed us of your love in the Spirit.
Meanwhile in Colossae: some people keep telling us what we can and can’t eat and drink, which festivals and new moons and Sabbaths to keep. Some are big on worshipping angels and go on about visions they’ve seen. Don’t handle this, don’t taste that, don’t touch the other.
Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a feast, a New Moon, or a Sabbath. Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you with speculation about what he has seen. Such a person is puffed up without basis by his unspiritual mind. “Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”?
Colossae. We’ve never stopped praying for you since the day we heard about you. God has rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. In him we’re set free, our sins forgiven.
COLOSSIANS 1:9; COLOSSIANS 1:13–14 · BSB
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
The Son is the image of the invisible God. Everything was made in him: in heaven and on earth, seen and unseen, thrones, powers, rulers, authorities. All of it was made through him and for him. He was there before anything else, and in him everything holds together.
COLOSSIANS 1:15–17 · BSB
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
God was pleased to have all his fullness live in him, and through him to bring everything back to himself, making peace through the blood of his cross.
COLOSSIANS 1:19–20 · BSB
For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross.
A secret kept hidden for ages and generations, and now it’s out. Here it is: Christ in you, the hope of glory.
COLOSSIANS 1:26–27 · BSB
the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations but is now revealed to His saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Don’t let anyone take you captive with hollow, deceptive philosophy that comes from human tradition and not from Christ. All the fullness of God lives in him, in a body.
COLOSSIANS 2:8–9 · BSB
See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, which are based on human tradition and the spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity dwells in bodily form.
You were dead in your sins. God made you alive with Christ and forgave every one of them. He cancelled the record of what we owed and took it away, nailing it to the cross.
COLOSSIANS 2:13–14 · BSB
When you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our trespasses, having canceled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross!
So don’t let anyone judge you over what you eat or drink, or festivals, new moons and Sabbaths. Those were a shadow of what was coming. The real thing is Christ.
Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a feast, a New Moon, or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the body that casts it belongs to Christ.
“Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!” Rules like that look wise, with their strict self-denial and harsh treatment of the body. But they do nothing at all to stop the wrong desires.
COLOSSIANS 2:21; COLOSSIANS 2:23 · BSB
“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”? Such restrictions indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-prescribed worship, their false humility, and their harsh treatment of the body; but they are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
You’ve been raised with Christ, so set your hearts on things above, where he is. Not on earthly things. You died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
COLOSSIANS 3:1–3 · BSB
Therefore, since you have been raised with Christ, strive for the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
God has chosen you and he loves you. So dress yourselves in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Put up with each other, and if anyone has a complaint against someone, forgive. Forgive the way the Lord forgave you. And over all of it, put on love. It holds everything together.
COLOSSIANS 3:12–14 · BSB
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.
Keep praying. Stay alert, and be thankful. Pray for us too, that God opens a door for the message. It’s why I’m in chains.
COLOSSIANS 4:2–3 · BSB
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful, as you pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.
Heading to Colossae with Paul’s letter and all his news. Onesimus is coming with me.
COLOSSIANS 4:7–9 · BSB
Tychicus will tell you all the news about me. He is a beloved brother, a faithful minister, and a fellow servant in the Lord. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know about us, and that he may encourage your hearts. With him I am sending Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you about everything here.
Epaphras, who’s one of you, sends his greetings. He’s always wrestling in prayer for you, that you’ll stand firm, grown up and sure of everything God wants. He works so hard for you, and for Laodicea and Hierapolis.
Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, so that you may stand mature and fully assured in the full will of God. For I testify about him that he goes to great pains for you and for those at Laodicea and Hierapolis.
Once this letter’s been read to you, get it read in the church at Laodicea as well. And you read the one I sent them.
COLOSSIANS 4:16 · BSB
After this letter has been read among you, make sure that it is also read in the church of the Laodiceans, and that you in turn read the letter from Laodicea.
