1 Peter 1

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Peter here. Yes, that Peter. Apostle of Jesus Christ. Writing to God’s chosen people living as exiles, scattered through Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia. Grace and peace to you, and plenty of both.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Praise God. Because of his huge mercy he’s given us a new birth into a living hope, because Jesus Christ rose from the dead. And an inheritance that can’t rot, spoil or fade, kept in heaven for you.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

I know you’re going through all sorts of trials right now, for a little while. Gold gets tested by fire, and gold doesn’t even last. Your faith is worth far more than gold.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

You’ve never seen him, and you love him. You don’t see him now, and you believe in him, and you’re full of a joy you can’t even put into words.

What Jesus told Thomas: blessed are the people who haven’t seen and still believe. Peter’s writing to them.

Jesus@jesusBlessed are the people who haven't seen me and still believe.
Simon Peter@simonpeter

The prophets searched and dug into this, trying to work out when it would all happen. It turns out they were serving you, not themselves. Even angels long to look into it.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

You weren’t bought back with silver or gold, stuff that doesn’t last. It was with the precious blood of Christ, like a lamb with no flaw or mark on it.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

People are like grass, and all their glory like wildflowers. The grass dries up and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord lasts for ever. And that word is the good news you were told.

Isaiah@isaiahA voice told me to shout. I asked, shout what? That people are like grass, all their beauty like wildflowers. The grass dries up and the flowers drop. The word of our God stands for ever.

1 Peter 2

Said this to the council in Jerusalem, and I’ll say it again. He’s the living stone. People threw him out; God chose him and values him. The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. And you’re living stones too, being built into a house for God.

Simon Peter@simonpeterTold the council: he’s the stone you builders threw out. The one that’s become the cornerstone.
Simon Peter@simonpeter

You’re a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s very own, to tell everyone about the one who called you out of the dark into his amazing light. Once you weren’t a people at all. Now you’re God’s people.

Moses@moses · Mount SinaiAt Sinai the LORD reminded us how he carried us on eagles’ wings and brought us to himself. Said if we keep his agreement, out of all the nations we’ll be his own treasure.

The neighbours have decided we’re the troublemakers. They’re going round calling us wrongdoers.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @cappadocia.believer

Live such good lives among them that even while they call you wrongdoers, they see the good you do and give God glory on the day he comes.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Respect everyone. Love your brothers and sisters. Fear God. Honour the king.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

When they insulted him, he didn’t insult them back. When he suffered, he didn’t threaten anyone. He left it with the one who judges fairly. He carried our sins in his own body on the cross, so we could be done with sin and live for what’s right. By his wounds you’ve been healed.

Isaiah@isaiahHe was treated cruelly and didn’t say a word. Like a lamb led off to be killed. Like a sheep that stays silent while it’s sheared. They condemned him and took him away, and his life was cut short. They gave him a grave with the wicked, and with a rich man, though he’d never done anything violent or said anything false.

1 Peter 3

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Don’t pay back evil with evil, or insult with insult. Bless instead. David had it right: whoever wants to love life and see good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from lies. Turn from evil, do good, go after peace.

David@davidWrote this one after pretending to be mad in front of the king in Gath. Scratching at the gate, spit running down my beard. He threw me out. Taste and see that the LORD is good.
Simon Peter@simonpeter

Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks why you’ve got the hope you’ve got. But do it gently, and with respect.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

In Noah’s day God waited patiently while the ark was being built, and eight people were brought safely through the water. That water is a picture of baptism, which saves you now. Not washing dirt off your body, but a clear conscience before God, through Jesus rising from the dead.

Noah@noahI was 600 when it started. The springs of the deep burst open, the windows of the sky opened, and it rained for forty days and forty nights. We went in, me, my wife, our sons and their wives, and the animals with us, two by two.

1 Peter 4

Old mates think it’s weird I don’t go out drinking and partying with them any more. Now they’re saying all sorts about me.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @cappadocia.believer

They’ll have to answer for it to the one who’s ready to judge the living and the dead.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Open your homes to each other. And no grumbling about it, please.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trial you’re going through, as if something strange were happening to you. If you’re insulted for the name of Christ, you’re blessed. If you suffer for being a Christian, don’t be ashamed. Praise God that you carry that name.

1 Peter 5

Simon Peter@simonpeter

To the elders among you, from a fellow elder who saw what Christ suffered: be shepherds of God’s flock. Look after them because you want to, not because you have to. Not for the money. Not bossing people about. Be an example to them.

Simon Peter@simonpeterThree times he asked if I love him. Each time he told me to look after his sheep. The third time hurt. Lord, you know everything. You know I love you.
Simon Peter@simonpeter

Throw all your worries on him, because he cares about you.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Keep a clear head and stay alert. Your enemy the devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat. Stand up to him, firm in your faith. Your brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same things.

Silas@silas

Peter’s written this through me, Silvanus. He calls it short. He wants you to know this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.

John Mark@johnmark

Hi from Mark. I’m here with Peter, who calls me his son. The church here in Babylon, chosen along with you, says hi too.
