Exodus 1

Moses@moses · Egypt

Where we left off: Jacob’s family, seventy of them, in Egypt. That generation dies. The family doesn’t stop growing. Soon the land is full of them.

Pharaoh, the new king@newkingofegypt

These Israelites have become far too numerous. Should war break out, they will join our enemies. We must deal with them shrewdly.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Slave drivers. Bricks. Mortar. Fields. And the harder they work us, the more of us there are.

Moses@moses

Then the king tries something quieter. He calls in two Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, and gives them an order: when you deliver a Hebrew baby, if it’s a boy, kill him. They don’t. They fear God more than they fear him.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

He calls them back in. Why are the boys still alive? Their answer: Hebrew women aren’t like Egyptian women. They’re strong. The baby’s out before the midwife even gets there.

Exodus 2

Moses@moses · The Nile

This part I only know because my family told me. My mother hid me for three months. Then she couldn’t any more. Papyrus basket, sealed with tar, set in the reeds by the Nile. The same river.

Miriam@miriam

Replying to @moses

I stood a little way off. I had to see what would happen to him.

Pharaoh’s daughter@pharaohsdaughter · The Nile

Went down to the Nile to bathe, and there was a basket in the reeds. A baby boy inside, crying. One of the Hebrew babies, obviously. I felt terribly sorry for him.

Miriam@miriam

Walked straight up to the king’s daughter, bold as you like, and offered to find a Hebrew woman to nurse him. She said yes. So I went and got our mum.

Pharaoh’s daughter@pharaohsdaughter · The NileWent down to the Nile to bathe, and there was a basket in the reeds. A baby boy inside, crying. One of the Hebrew babies, obviously. I felt terribly sorry for him.
Jochebed@jochebed

Replying to @miriam

She paid me. To nurse my own son.

Pharaoh’s daughter@pharaohsdaughter

He’s mine now. I’ve named him Moses, because I drew him out of the water.

Jochebed@jochebed

Replying to @pharaohsdaughter

And when he was old enough, I brought him back to you myself.

Moses@moses

I grew up in the palace as the princess’s son. One day, grown up, I went out to see my own people at their hard labour, and saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew. I looked this way and that. Nobody around. I killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

A Hebrew man in a fight@hebrew.fighting

Next day the palace boy, Moses, tries to break up my fight with another Hebrew. Who made you our ruler and judge, mate? Going to kill me like you killed the Egyptian? Yeah. People know about that.

Moses@moses

So people knew. Then Pharaoh heard, and wanted me dead. I ran. All the way to Midian.

A Hebrew man in a fight@hebrew.fightingNext day the palace boy, Moses, tries to break up my fight with another Hebrew. Who made you our ruler and judge, mate? Going to kill me like you killed the Egyptian? Yeah. People know about that.
Zipporah@zipporah · Midian

Seven of us sisters at the well, watering Dad’s flock. Shepherds drove us off. Then an Egyptian stood up, saw them off, and watered our whole flock himself.

Jethro@jethro

Replying to @zipporah

Wait, where is he? You just left the man out there? Go invite him in to eat!

Moses@moses · Midian

We had a son. I called him Gershom. A foreigner in a foreign land.

Moses@moses

The Israelites cry out under their slavery. God hears them. He remembers his promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He sees them.

Exodus 3

Moses@moses · Horeb

Out with the sheep near Horeb. There’s a bush on fire, and it isn’t burning up.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

God called my name from inside it. Told me to take off my sandals, because the ground I was standing on was holy. I hid my face. I was afraid to look at God.

Moses@moses

He said he’s seen his people suffering. He’s heard them. He’s come down to rescue them. So go, he’s sending me to Pharaoh. Me.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

I asked, who am I? He didn’t answer that. He said, “I will be with you.”

Moses@moses

God’s name: I AM WHO I AM. Every time you read “the LORD” in this book, that’s the name.

Exodus 4

Moses@moses

He turned my staff into a snake. I ran. Yes, I ran.

Moses@moses

Told him I’ve never been good with words. He said, “Who made the human mouth?”

Moses@moses

Then I actually said it. “Please, Lord. Send someone else.”

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

God was angry with me. Fair.

Aaron@aaron

So God told me to go out into the desert and meet my little brother, which I did, and I found him at the mountain of God and kissed him, and then he told me everything. All of it. Every word the LORD had sent him with, and every sign.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Aaron talked, Moses did the signs, and we believed. The LORD has seen us. We bowed down right there.

Exodus 5

Pharaoh@pharaoh · Pharaoh’s court

Who is this LORD, and why exactly should I obey him? I am not acquainted with him. And I will not be letting Israel go.

Moses@moses

That was his first answer.

Pharaoh@pharaoh · Pharaoh’s courtWho is this LORD, and why exactly should I obey him? I am not acquainted with him. And I will not be letting Israel go.
An Egyptian slave driver@egypt.slavedriver

New orders from the top. No more straw for the Hebrews’ bricks. They find their own. Same quota. Not one brick less.

An Israelite foreman@israelite.foreman

They beat us for missing the quota. We went to Pharaoh. He called us lazy. Lazy, twice.

An Egyptian slave driver@egypt.slavedriverNew orders from the top. No more straw for the Hebrews’ bricks. They find their own. Same quota. Not one brick less.
An Israelite foreman@israelite.foreman

Told Moses and Aaron straight: may the LORD judge you for this. You’ve made us stink to Pharaoh and his officials. You’ve put a sword in their hands to kill us.

Moses@moses

Went back to the LORD. Why did you send me? It’s only got worse, and you haven’t rescued them.

An Israelite foreman@israelite.foremanTold Moses and Aaron straight: may the LORD judge you for this. You’ve made us stink to Pharaoh and his officials. You’ve put a sword in their hands to kill us.

Exodus 6

Moses@moses

God said he’ll bring them out. Free them. Take them as his own people, and be their God.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Replying to @moses

Moses told us. We didn’t listen. We were too broken, and the work was too hard.

Exodus 7

Moses@moses

People ask. I was eighty when we stood in front of Pharaoh. Aaron was eighty-three.

Aaron@aaron · Pharaoh’s court

Threw my staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, exactly as we’d been told, and it became a snake. His wise men and sorcerers did the same with their staffs, I’ll give them that. Then mine swallowed theirs.

Moses@moses

Replying to @aaron

He still wouldn’t listen.

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour · The Nile

Right. So they’re saying Aaron hit the Nile with his staff this morning, right in front of Pharaoh. The river’s turned to blood. The fish are dead. The smell is unreal.

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour

Replying to @egypt.neighbour

Seven days digging holes by the river for water we could drink.

Pharaoh’s officials@pharaohscourt

Kindly note: frogs. In the palace. In our houses. In the bedrooms. On the beds. In the ovens.

Pharaoh’s magicians@pharaohsmagicians

Replying to @pharaohscourt

We were able to produce frogs as well.

Moses@moses

Pharaoh asked me to pray the frogs away. I said name the time. He said: tomorrow.

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour

Replying to @moses

They died in the end. We shovelled them into heaps, and the whole country stank.

Moses@moses

The moment he got some relief, he dug his heels in again and wouldn’t listen. You’ll notice a pattern.

Pharaoh’s magicians@pharaohsmagicians

Gnats. We tried our secret arts. We could not. We informed His Majesty: this is the finger of God.

The Israelites@theisraelites · Goshen

Flies everywhere in Egypt. Not one in Goshen. Just saying.

Exodus 9

Moses@moses

Plague six. Soot thrown into the air, and boils break out all over Egypt.

Pharaoh’s magicians@pharaohsmagicians

Replying to @moses

We were unable to stand in front of Moses. The boils. We had them too.

Moses has announced the worst hail in Egypt’s history for tomorrow. I am bringing my livestock and workers indoors. Is anyone else?

Replying to @court.official

A number of my colleagues at court have left theirs out in the fields.

Pharaoh@pharaoh

Very well. This time I have sinned. The LORD is in the right, and my people and I are in the wrong. Enough thunder and hail. They may go.

Moses@moses

Replying to @pharaoh

Like I told you: I’ll pray, and the hail will stop. And I know you still don’t fear the LORD.

Exodus 10

Pharaoh’s officials@pharaohscourt

With respect, Your Majesty: how long is this man to be a trap for us? Let them go. Does Your Majesty not yet see that Egypt is ruined?

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour

Locusts. The ground literally went black with them. Not one green thing left anywhere in Egypt.

Pharaoh@pharaoh

Summoned Moses and Aaron urgently. I have sinned against the LORD their God, and against them. I asked them to forgive me just this once more, and to pray for this deadly plague to be taken away from me.

Moses@moses

Plague nine: darkness you could feel. Three days. Nobody could see anyone else.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @moses

In our homes there was light.

Exodus 8

Moses@moses

Pharaoh’s offers, in order. 1. Sacrifice here in Egypt. 2. The desert, but not far. 3. Men only. 4. Everyone, but the animals stay.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

My answer to number four: not a hoof left behind.

Exodus 10

Moses@moses

Last thing he said to me: never let me see your face again. I said: fine. You won’t.

Exodus 11

Moses@moses

Nine so far. Blood. Frogs. Gnats. Flies. Livestock. Boils. Hail. Locusts. Darkness. One more to come.

Moses@moses

What I told Pharaoh. At midnight the LORD will go through Egypt, and every firstborn son will die, from Pharaoh’s own son to the son of the slave girl at the hand mill. Then I walked out, furious.

Exodus 12

Moses@moses

Every household: a lamb. Its blood on the doorframe. Eat it that night with sandals on and staff in hand, ready to leave. It’s the LORD’s Passover.

Moses@moses

When your children ask what this meal means, tell them. The LORD passed over our houses in Egypt.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Replying to @moses

We bowed down and worshipped. Then we did exactly what you told us.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Lamb’s blood on the doorframe. Sandals on, staff in hand, eating in a hurry. Nobody leaves the house till morning.

Moses@moses

Midnight. The LORD strikes down every firstborn in Egypt, from Pharaoh’s son to the prisoner’s son in the dungeon. There isn’t a house without someone dead.

Pharaoh@pharaoh

Up. Leave my people, you and the Israelites. Go and worship the LORD, as you asked. Take your flocks and herds, as you said, and go. And bless me as well.

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour

Please, just go. Otherwise we’re all going to die.

The Israelites@theisraelites

No time. Bread dough still in the bowls, not even risen. Wrapped it in our cloaks and carried it on our shoulders.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @theisraelites

Baked it flat on the road. Nobody had packed a thing.

Asked our Egyptian neighbours for silver, gold and clothes, like Moses said. No because they just handed it over.

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour

Moses@moses

Four hundred and thirty years in Egypt. To the very day. And we walk out.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

About 600,000 men on foot, plus women and children, plus a mixed crowd who came with us, plus the animals.

Moses@moses

God told Abraham this, the night of the firepot and the torch. His descendants would be slaves in a land that wasn’t theirs, and then they’d come out. Here we are. Coming out.

Abraham@abrahamHe told me my descendants would be slaves in a land that isn’t theirs for 400 years, and then come out. After dark, a smoking firepot and a blazing torch passed between the pieces. Only the fire went through.

Exodus 13

Moses@moses

We took Joseph’s bones with us. He made his family swear to it, centuries ago. We kept it.

Joseph@joseph.son.of.jacob · EgyptI’m about to die. But God will definitely come for you and take you up out of this land, to the land he promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. When he does, carry my bones up from here.
Moses@moses

God didn’t take us the short way, past the Philistines. He said if they saw war, they might turn back to Egypt.

Moses@moses

A pillar of cloud ahead of us by day. A pillar of fire by night. It never left.

Exodus 14

Pharaoh@pharaoh

An Israelite by the Red Sea@israelite.redsea · By the Red Sea

Egyptians behind us. Sea in front. Seriously, Moses, were there not enough graves in Egypt? You had to bring us out here to die? We told you back there to leave us alone and let us serve the Egyptians. Better that than dying in the desert.

Moses@moses

Don’t be afraid. Stand firm. The LORD will fight for you. You only need to be still.

Moses@moses · The Red Sea

I stretched out my hand over the sea. All night the LORD drove it back with an east wind. We walked through on dry ground. A wall of water on our right, a wall of water on our left.

Miriam@miriam

Our wheels are wobbling. We can barely drive. We need to get away from the Israelites. The LORD is fighting for them against Egypt.

Moses@moses

At daybreak the sea came back. It covered the chariots and riders, Pharaoh’s whole army. Not one survived.

The Israelites@theisraelites

We saw what the LORD had done. We feared him, and we trusted him, and Moses.

Exodus 15

Moses@moses

I’ll sing to the LORD. He’s thrown horse and rider into the sea. The LORD is my strength and my song.
