Same first words as Genesis. In the beginning.
Let’s start at the actual beginning. Before anything, there’s God. Then God creates the heavens and the earth. It’s dark and empty, deep water everywhere, and God’s Spirit is hovering over the surface. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Life was in him, and that life was light for everyone. The light shines in the dark, and the dark hasn't put it out.
In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The Word became a human being and lived among us. We saw his glory with our own eyes. He was full of grace and truth.
The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Told you. He comes after me, but he was before me.
John testified concerning Him. He cried out, saying, “This is He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’”
Nobody has ever seen God. The one and only Son, right at the Father's side, has shown us what he's like.
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side, has made Him known.
Priests came all the way from Jerusalem to ask who I am. Not the Christ. Not Elijah. Not the Prophet. Just a voice in the desert: make the road straight for the Lord.
And this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?” He did not refuse to confess, but openly declared, “I am not the Christ.” “Then who are you?” they inquired. “Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet: “I am a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”

I didn't know who it would be. The one who sent me to baptise told me: the man you see the Spirit come down on and stay on, that's him. I saw it. The Spirit came down from heaven like a dove and stayed on him. He's the Son of God.
Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him. I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
Heard John say that, so two of us who follow John went after Jesus. He turned round and asked what we wanted. We asked where he was staying. Come and see, he said. So we did. About four in the afternoon, and we stayed the rest of the day.

When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked. They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?” “Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and spent that day with Him. It was about the tenth hour.
Went straight to my brother. “Simon. We've found the Messiah.”

Nazareth? Can anything good come out of Nazareth? When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit.” “How do You know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” “Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
He told Nathanael he'd see bigger things than that. Heaven wide open, and God's angels going up and coming down on the Son of Man.
Slept out with a stone for a pillow. Dreamed of a stairway from earth to heaven, with God’s angels going up and down on it. And the LORD standing above it, telling me he’s with me, he’ll watch over me wherever I go, and he’ll bring me back to this land.Jesus said to him, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Wedding in Cana. Things that happened: 1. The wine runs out. 2. His mother tells the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 3. Six stone jars filled to the brim with water. 4. It's not water any more.
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, what is that to you and to Me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” Now six stone water jars had been set there for the Jewish rites of purification. Each could hold from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. “Now draw some out,” He said, “and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not know where it was from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside

On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?” “This temple took forty-six years to build,” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days?”
One night he had a visitor. Nicodemus, a Pharisee, one of the leaders. Came after dark and said: we know you're a teacher who's come from God. Nobody could do these signs unless God was with him.
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs You are doing if God were not with him.”

Noon at Jacob's well. He's worn out from the walk, so he sits down while we go into town for food.
Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

Okay, so a Jewish man just asked me for a drink. Jews don't even share cups with Samaritans.
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) “You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Pool of Bethesda. Thirty-eight years ill, lying there with all the others. A man asked if I wanted to get well. I said I've got nobody to help me into the water. He said: get up, pick up your mat and walk. So I did.
Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool with five covered colonnades, which in Hebrew is called Bethesda. On these walkways lay a great number of the sick, the blind, the lame, and the paralyzed. One man there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and realized that he had spent a long time in this condition, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am on my way, someone else goes in before me.” Then Jesus told him, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.” Immediately the man was made well, and he picked up his mat and began to walk. Now this happened on the Sabbath day,

Afterward, Jesus found the man at the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Stop sinning, or something worse may happen to you.” And the man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
Now they want him dead. Not just for the Sabbath. He's calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
Now because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews began to persecute Him. But Jesus answered them, “To this very day My Father is at His work, and I too am working.” Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him. Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
Yesterday he fed over five thousand people. A boy had five loaves and two fish, and that was it. Twelve baskets of leftovers.
When Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?” But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do. Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece.” One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?” “Have the people sit down,” Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them. Then Jesus took the loaves and the fish, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

Middle of the lake, middle of the night, wind against us. Then he's there. Walking on the water. “It's me. Don't be afraid.”
When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to them. A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the sea—and they were terrified. But Jesus spoke up: “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
Went all the way round the lake to find him. Asked when he'd got there. He didn't answer. Said we only came back because of the free bread.
So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him. When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?” Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” “Who is He, Sir?” he replied. “Tell me so that I may believe in Him.” “You have already seen Him,” Jesus answered. “He is the One speaking with you.” “Lord, I believe,” he said. Dinner in Bethany for Jesus. Martha's serving. I'm at the table.
Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the hometown of Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. So they hosted a dinner for Jesus there. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with Him.
It was Mary, Lazarus's sister. A pint of pure nard, on his feet, and she wiped them with her hair. The whole house smelled of it.

When they said he claimed to be the Son of God, I got more afraid. Went back in and asked him where he's from. Nothing. I told him I have the power to free him or crucify him. He said I'd have no power over him at all unless it had been given me from above.
“We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that law He must die, because He declared Himself to be the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid, and he went back into the Praetorium. “Where are You from?” he asked. But Jesus gave no answer. So Pilate said to Him, “Do You refuse to speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You and authority to crucify You?” Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed Me over to you is guilty of greater sin.”

The soldiers drew lots for his tunic rather than tear it. It was seamless, woven in one piece. Scripture said they would.
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided His garments into four parts, one for each soldier, with the tunic remaining. It was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it. Instead, let us cast lots to see who will get it.” This was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My garments among them, and cast lots for My clothing.” So that is what the soldiers did.
The scripture I meant is the psalm where they split up his clothes and draw lots for what he's wearing. That's exactly what the soldiers did.

His mother was standing by the cross, and I was next to her. He said to her, “Here is your son.” And to me, “Here is your mother.” From then on she lived with me.
Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother and her sister, as well as Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.
“I'm thirsty.” Then: “It is finished.” He bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
After this, knowing that everything had now been accomplished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was sitting there. When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.

The man who came at night. That was me. Today I brought seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes, and Joseph of Arimathea and I wrapped his body in linen and laid it in a new tomb in the garden.
One night he had a visitor. Nicodemus, a Pharisee, one of the leaders. Came after dark and said: we know you're a teacher who's come from God. Nobody could do these signs unless God was with him.Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed His body. Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom. Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. And because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.
Went to the tomb early, still dark. The stone's been moved away. Ran and told Simon Peter and John: they've taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they've put him.
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,” she said, “and we do not know where they have put Him!”

Simon Peter arrived just after him. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.
I thought he was the gardener. Then he said my name.
“Woman, why are you weeping?” Jesus asked. “Whom are you seeking?” Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him off, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
I've seen the Lord.
I thought he was the gardener. Then he said my name.Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what He had said to her.
Doors locked. And he's standing among us. “Peace be with you.”
It was the first day of the week, and that very evening, while the disciples were together with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you!” He said to them.

He showed us his hands and his side. We were overjoyed.
After He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
I wasn't there when he came. Now they keep telling me they've seen the Lord. Not believing it till I see the nail marks in his hands and put my hand into his side.
Now Thomas called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”

We're not making it up, Thomas. We've seen the Lord.
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.”
A week later. He was there. My Lord and my God.
I wasn't there when he came. Now they keep telling me they've seen the Lord. Not believing it till I see the nail marks in his hands and put my hand into his side.Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside with the doors locked, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God!”
Blessed are the people who haven't seen me and still believe.
Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Going fishing.
Simon Peter told them, “I am going fishing.” “We will go with you,” they said. So they went out and got into the boat, but caught nothing that night.

Someone on the shore says throw the net on the right side of the boat. Now we can't haul it in.
Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize that it was Jesus. So He called out to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” “No,” they answered. He told them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it there, and they were unable to haul it in because of the great number of fish.

It's the Lord.
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it) and jumped into the sea.
A hundred and fifty-three fish. And the net didn't tear.
So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many, the net was not torn.
On the shore there's a charcoal fire, fish on it, and some bread. “Come and have breakfast.” None of us dared ask who he was. We knew it was the Lord.
When they landed, they saw a charcoal fire there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus told them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many, the net was not torn. “Come, have breakfast,” Jesus said to them. None of the disciples dared to ask Him, “Who are You?” They knew it was the Lord.
Three times he asked if I love him. Each time he told me to look after his sheep. The third time hurt. Lord, you know everything. You know I love you.
I'll give my life for him. When they had finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus replied, “Feed My lambs.” Jesus asked a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” “Yes, Lord,” he answered, “You know I love You.” Jesus told him, “Shepherd My sheep.” Jesus asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was deeply hurt that Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love Me?” “Lord, You know all things,” he replied. “You know I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.
He told Peter what kind of death he would die. Then: “Follow me.”
Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And after He had said this, He told him, “Follow Me.”
Saw John following us and asked: Lord, what about him?
Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. He was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper to ask, “Lord, who is going to betray You?” When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

So a rumour went round that I wasn't going to die. He didn't say that. He said if he wants me to stay until he comes back, what's that to Peter?
Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. However, Jesus did not say that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?”
