Esther 1

The book of Esther@bookofesther · Susa

Welcome to Susa, capital of Persia. The king is Xerxes, and he rules 127 provinces, from India to Cush at the far end of the Nile. Third year of his reign, he throws a party for every official and army leader in the empire. It lasts 180 days. The point is to show off how rich he is.

Someone in Susa@someone.insusa · Susa

And straight after that, a seven-day party in the palace garden for everyone in Susa, from the least important to the greatest. Things I saw: 1. White and blue linen hangings on silver rings and marble pillars. 2. Gold and silver couches on a mosaic floor. 3. Gold cups, every one a different design. 4. King's orders: no limit on the drinking.

Day seven. The king had had a fair bit to drink, and sent seven of us to bring Queen Vashti, wearing her crown, so the people and officials could see how beautiful she is. She was giving her own banquet for the women inside the palace at the time.

Memucan@memucan

My view, since the king asked. The queen hasn't just wronged the king. She's wronged every official and every people in the empire. When women hear about this they'll look down on their husbands. They'll say the king sent for Queen Vashti and she didn't come. So: a royal decree, written into the laws of Persia and Media so it can never be undone. Vashti never comes before the king again, and her position goes to someone better.

The book of Esther@bookofesther

Replying to @memucan

The king loves it. Letters go out to every province, each in its own script and each people in its own language: every man is to be in charge of his own household.

Esther 2

Some time later, the king's anger has cooled. He remembers Vashti. What she did, and what was decreed against her.

The king’s attendants@kingsattendants

Our suggestion for the king: officers in every province to find beautiful young women and bring them all to the harem here in Susa, under Hegai's care, with beauty treatments. Whoever pleases the king becomes queen instead of Vashti.

Meet Mordecai. A Jewish man in Susa, from the tribe of Benjamin. His family was carried off from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, years ago. He raised his cousin Hadassah, also called Esther, as his own daughter after her mother and father died. She's beautiful.

Hegai@hegai

New arrivals in the harem. One of them, Esther, I took to from the start. Gave her the beauty treatments and special food early, seven maids from the palace, and the best rooms in the place.

The book of Esther@bookofesther

Replying to @hegai

Esther hasn't told anyone who her people are, or her family. Mordecai told her not to. Every day he walks up and down outside the harem courtyard to find out how she is.

We have a new queen. Esther. The king loved her more than all the others and put the crown on her head himself. Huge banquet in her honour, gifts, and a tax holiday across the provinces.

Replying to @someone.insusa

A tax holiday. Long live the queen.

A royal servant at the king’s gate@servant.kingsgate · The king's gate, Susa

Two of the king's doorkeepers, Bigthan and Teresh, were plotting to kill the king. Word is Mordecai, who sits here at the gate, found out. He told the queen, and she told the king it came from Mordecai.

Replying to @servant.kingsgate

It checked out. Both of them were hanged. The whole thing's been written in the royal records, in front of the king.

Esther 3

The book of Esther@bookofesther

Some time after this, King Xerxes promotes Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, above every other official at court. And the king orders everyone at the gate to bow down to him.

A royal servant at the king’s gate@servant.kingsgate · The king's gate, Susa

Everyone at the gate bows to Haman now. King's orders. Except Mordecai. We kept asking him why he's disobeying the king. Day after day. Nothing. He'd told us he's a Jew.

Replying to @servant.kingsgate

So we told Haman. Wanted to see whether Mordecai would get away with it.

The book of Esther@bookofesther

Haman sees it for himself. Mordecai won't bow. He's livid. And once he knows who Mordecai's people are, getting rid of one man isn't enough for him. He wants every Jew in Xerxes' kingdom destroyed.

First month of the king's twelfth year. They cast pur in front of Haman, that's the lot, to choose the day. It falls on the twelfth month, Adar. Eleven months away.

The book of Esther@bookofesther

Replying to @bookofesther

What Haman says to the king: there's a certain people scattered through every province, with laws different from everyone else's, who don't keep the king's laws. Let's destroy them, and I'll pay ten thousand talents of silver into the treasury. He never says who they are.

Summoned today, thirteenth of the first month. Wrote out an order exactly as Haman dictated it, to every governor and official, every province in its own script, every people in its own language. In the king's name. Sealed with his ring.

What it says: on one day, the thirteenth of Adar, every Jew in the empire, young and old, women and children, is to be killed, and everything they own taken. A copy goes up in every province so people are ready.

The book of Esther@bookofesther

The couriers ride out. The order goes up in Susa. The king and Haman sit down for a drink.

Someone in Susa@someone.insusa · Susa

Replying to @bookofesther

Wait. What is going on? Nobody in the city can make sense of it.

Esther 4

Someone in Susa@someone.insusa · Susa

Mordecai has torn his clothes and put on sackcloth, the rough cloth people wear to mourn, with ashes on him. He walked through the middle of the city wailing out loud. Went as far as the king's gate. You're not allowed through it in sackcloth.

Replying to @someone.insusa

It's the same everywhere the order has reached. Fasting, crying, grieving. People lying in sackcloth and ashes.

Hathach@hathach

Back and forth between the queen and the square in front of the king's gate. Several times. That's all I'm saying.

The book of Esther@bookofesther

What Hathach isn't saying. Esther heard about Mordecai and was distraught. She sent him clothes, and he wouldn't take them. So she sent Hathach to ask what was wrong. Mordecai told him everything, down to the exact sum Haman promised the treasury. He gave him a copy of the decree to show her, and told her to go to the king and plead for her people.

Her answer: everyone knows the law. Anyone who goes in to the king without being called is put to death, unless the king holds out his gold sceptre. And he hasn't sent for her in thirty days.

Haman@haman

What a day. Honoured to share that the queen invited nobody to her dinner except the king and me. And I'm invited back tomorrow. Had my friends and my wife round tonight and went through it all: the money, my sons, every promotion the king has given me.

Haman@haman

Replying to @haman

And yet none of it is worth anything to me as long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate. Walked past him today. He didn't get up. Didn't even flinch.

Haman@haman

The king just asked me what should be done for the man he wants to honour. My advice: a royal robe the king has worn, a horse the king has ridden with the royal crest on its head, and one of his top nobles to dress the man and lead him through the square, announcing that this is how the king honours someone. I wonder who it's for.

Second dinner at the queen's. The king asked her again what she wants, up to half the kingdom. She asked for her life. And her people's. They've been sold to be destroyed, she said. If it had only been slavery she'd have kept quiet.

The king has given me Haman's estate. I told him who Mordecai is to me. He's given Mordecai his signet ring, the one he took back from Haman. And I've put Mordecai in charge of Haman's estate.

Esther@queenesther

Went back to the king. Fell at his feet crying. Haman's letters are still out there, and the day is still coming. How can I watch my people be destroyed? He held out the sceptre again.

What's written in the king's name and sealed with the king's ring can't be undone. So I've told Queen Esther and Mordecai: write another one about the Jews, whatever you think best, in my name, and seal it with my ring.

Light, happiness, joy and honour. Everywhere the new order arrives, feasting and celebrating. Plenty of people have even become Jews, they're so afraid of the Jews now.

Esther 9

The book of Esther@bookofesther

The thirteenth of Adar comes, the day their enemies hoped to overpower them, and it turns the other way. Across the provinces the Jews stand together, and their enemies fall.

Mordecai@mordecai

To all the Jews in every province, near and far. Keep the fourteenth and fifteenth of Adar every year. The days we got rest from our enemies. The month our sorrow turned to joy and our mourning into a holiday. Feast, send each other food, and give gifts to the poor.
