Elders. Everyone. Has anything like this ever happened in your lifetime? Or your parents'? Tell your children. Make them tell theirs.
What one swarm of locusts left, the next swarm ate. What that one left, the next ate. And what that one left, the last one finished off.
JOEL 1:2–4 · BSB
Hear this, O elders; and give ear, all who dwell in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your fathers? Tell it to your children; let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation. What the devouring locust has left, the swarming locust has eaten; what the swarming locust has left, the young locust has eaten; and what the young locust has left, the destroying locust has eaten.
The locusts have stripped the bark off my vines and the fig trees. The branches have gone white. Vines dried up, figs withered, pomegranate, palm, apple, all of it. Wheat and barley gone too. Gutted doesn't cover it.
JOEL 1:7; JOEL 1:11–12 · BSB
It has laid waste My grapevine and splintered My fig tree. It has stripped off the bark and thrown it away; the branches have turned white. Be dismayed, O farmers, wail, O vinedressers, over the wheat and barley, because the harvest of the field has perished. The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, palm, and apple—all the trees of the orchard—are withered. Surely the joy of mankind has dried up.
Honestly, it's the joy that's dried up. For everyone.
JOEL 1:12 · BSB
The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, palm, and apple—all the trees of the orchard—are withered. Surely the joy of mankind has dried up.
No grain offering at the house of the LORD. No wine offering. The priests are in mourning. We'll be spending the night in sackcloth.
JOEL 1:9; JOEL 1:13 · BSB
Grain and drink offerings have been cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests are in mourning, those who minister before the LORD. Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests; wail, O ministers of the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God, because the grain and drink offerings are withheld from the house of your God.
Call a fast. Call everyone together. Elders, everyone who lives in the land, to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to him.
JOEL 1:14 · BSB
Consecrate a fast; proclaim a solemn assembly! Gather the elders and all the residents of the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.
Blow the horn in Zion. It's coming. Like dawn spreading over the mountains, a huge army, like nothing before and nothing after. In front of it the land is like the garden of Eden. Behind it, desert.
JOEL 2:1–3 · BSB
Blow the ram’s horn in Zion; sound the alarm on My holy mountain! Let all who dwell in the land tremble, for the Day of the LORD is coming; indeed, it is near— a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like the dawn overspreading the mountains a great and strong army appears, such as never was of old, nor will ever be in ages to come. Before them a fire devours, and behind them a flame scorches. The land before them is like the Garden of Eden, but behind them, it is like a desert wasteland—surely nothing will escape them.
They charge like soldiers. Nobody jostles anybody, every one keeps its line. Up the city wall, running along the top of it, into the houses. In through the windows like thieves.
JOEL 2:7–9 · BSB
They charge like mighty men; they scale the walls like men of war. Each one marches in formation, not swerving from the course. They do not jostle one another; each proceeds in his path. They burst through the defenses, never breaking ranks. They storm the city; they run along the wall; they climb into houses, entering through windows like thieves.
Even now, the LORD says, come back to me with all your heart. Fasting, crying, grieving.
Tear your hearts, not your clothes. Come back to the LORD your God. He's gracious and compassionate, slow to get angry, full of love, and he holds back from sending disaster.
“Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning.” So rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending disaster.
Get everyone. The old people, the children, the babies still feeding. Even the bride and groom. Come out of the wedding room.
JOEL 2:15–16 · BSB
Blow the ram’s horn in Zion, consecrate a fast, proclaim a sacred assembly. Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the aged, gather the children, even those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her chamber.
Weeping between the porch and the altar today, all of us. Spare your people, LORD. Don't let the nations say, where is their God?
JOEL 2:17 · BSB
Let the priests who minister before the LORD weep between the portico and the altar, saying, “Spare Your people, O LORD, and do not make Your heritage a reproach, an object of scorn among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
And the LORD was jealous for his land, and had pity on his people. He's answered: grain, new wine and oil, and plenty of it.
JOEL 2:18–19 · BSB
Then the LORD became jealous for His land, and He spared His people. And the LORD answered His people: “Behold, I will send you grain, new wine, and oil, and by them you will be satisfied. I will never again make you a reproach among the nations.
He'll pay us back for the years the locusts ate. That's what the LORD said.
JOEL 2:25 · BSB
I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts—the swarming locust, the young locust, the destroying locust, and the devouring locust—My great army that I sent against you.
I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts—the swarming locust, the young locust, the destroying locust, and the devouring locust—My great army that I sent against you.
And after that, the LORD says, I'll pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. Even the servants, men and women.
JOEL 2:28–29 · BSB
And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on My menservants and maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.
JOEL 2:32 · BSB
And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has promised, among the remnant called by the LORD.
Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war; rouse the mighty men; let all the men of war advance and attack! Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weak say, ‘I am strong!’
One day the mountains will drip with sweet wine and the hills will flow with milk. Every stream in Judah running with water, and a spring flowing out of the house of the LORD.
JOEL 3:18 · BSB
And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine, and the hills will flow with milk. All the streams of Judah will run with water, and a spring will flow from the house of the LORD to water the Valley of Acacias.
