1 Thessalonians 2

A believer in Thessalonica@believer.thessalonica · Thessalonica

That was our church. Paul and Silas had to be got out of the city, and since then we’ve had a hard time of it from people here.

Someone in the mob in Thessalonica@thessalonica.mob · ThessalonicaWent to Jason’s house looking for Paul and Silas. Not there. So we dragged Jason and some of the believers in front of the city officials instead. These men who’ve turned the world upside down have come here too, and Jason’s put them up! They’re all defying Caesar, saying there’s another king. Jesus.

We couldn’t bear it any longer, so we stayed on in Athens by ourselves and sent Timothy to see how you were. I was scared the tempter had got to you, and all our work had been for nothing.

Back from Thessalonica, and it’s good news. Their faith is holding, their love is real, they think of us fondly, and they want to see us as much as we want to see them.

Paul@paul

Thessalonica. We thank God for you all the time. Your work that comes from faith, your hard work that comes from love, your hope in our Lord Jesus Christ that doesn’t give up.

Paul@paul

We don’t even need to tell people about you. Everywhere we go, they’re already telling us how you turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven.

It’s true. Idols gone. Waiting.

1 Thessalonians 2

Paul@paul

When we got to you, we’d just been beaten and humiliated in Philippi. Even so, God gave us the courage to tell you the good news, with plenty of people against us.

Silas@silas · PhilippiStripped, beaten with rods, thrown in the inner cell with our feet in the stocks. Around midnight Paul and I were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. Then an earthquake. Every door opened. Everyone’s chains came loose.
Paul@paul

We were gentle with you, like a mother nursing her children. We loved you so much we were glad to share not just the good news of God but our own lives. You’d become that dear to us.

Paul@paul

Remember how hard we worked? Night and day, so we wouldn’t be a burden to any of you while we told you the good news.

Silas@silas

Replying to @paul

Night and day. He’s not exaggerating.

Paul@paul

We were torn away from you for a while. In person, not in heart. I tried to come back to you again and again, and Satan blocked us. You’re our pride and joy.

Paul@paul

Make it your ambition to live a quiet life, mind your own business and work with your hands, like we told you. Then outsiders will respect you, and you won’t have to depend on anyone.

Some people here know exactly who that one’s aimed at. Naming no names.

Some of us have died since we believed. What happens to them when the Lord comes back?

Paul@paul

Replying to @believer.thessalonica

We don’t want you grieving like people who have no hope. We believe Jesus died and rose again, and so God will bring with Jesus the ones who have died trusting him.

Paul@paul

The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a loud command, with an archangel’s voice and God’s trumpet, and the dead who belong to Christ will rise first. Then those of us still alive will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And we’ll be with the Lord for ever. So encourage each other with this.

The dead first. They won’t miss a thing.

1 Thessalonians 5

Paul@paul

You don’t need me to write about dates and times. You know the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. Just when people are saying everything’s peaceful and safe, destruction will come on them suddenly.

Paul@paul

Replying to @paul

But you’re children of the light, children of the day. So let’s not be asleep like everyone else. Let’s stay awake and clear-headed.

Paul@paul

Warn the ones who won’t pull their weight. Encourage the timid. Help the weak. Be patient with everyone.

Paul@paul

Be joyful always. Never stop praying. Give thanks whatever happens.

Paul@paul

Test everything. Hold on to what’s good.

Paul@paul

The one who calls you is faithful. He’ll do it.

Paul@paul

I’m putting you under oath before the Lord: get this letter read to every single one of the believers.

Okay, okay. Everyone. Got it.
