Numbers 1

The Israelites@theisraelites · Wilderness of Sinai

Headcount done. Every man twenty and over who can fight: 603,550. That’s a lot of mouths to feed in a desert.

Numbers 2

The Israelites@theisraelites

The LORD’s tent goes in the middle, and every family camps round it under its own banner. Lost? Find your banner, find your family.

Numbers 3

Aaron@aaron

Quick explainer, because people keep asking. There were 273 more firstborn sons than Levites, so those 273 had to be bought back. Five shekels each, paid to me and my sons. And yes, before anyone asks, somebody counted to the last one.

Numbers 6

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Right, so. Anyone, man or woman, can make a Nazirite vow and set themselves apart for the LORD for a while. The rules: 1. No wine. No grapes. Not even raisins. 2. No haircut. 3. No going near a dead body.

Aaron@aaron

The words the LORD gave me and my sons to say over everyone. That’s our job now. The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make his face shine on you and be kind to you. The LORD look on you with favour and give you peace.

Numbers 7

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Twelve leaders. Twelve days. One a day, each bringing exactly the same gift. Same silver plate, same bowl, same animals. Every single day.

Moses@moses

When I go into the tent, I hear the voice. It speaks to me from between the two cherubim above the ark.

Numbers 9

We’d been near a dead body, so we couldn’t keep the Passover. Asked Moses straight out why we should miss it. He said wait here, he’d ask the LORD.

Replying to @missed.passover

Update: we get to keep it a month later. Same meal. We’re not left out after all.

The Israelites@theisraelites

When the cloud lifts off the tent, we pack up. When it settles, we stay. A night or a year. When the LORD says go, we go.

Numbers 10

Moses@moses

Asked my brother-in-law Hobab to come with us. He said no, he’s going home. I asked again. You know this desert. Be our eyes.

Moses@moses

Every time the ark set off: “Rise up, LORD! Scatter your enemies.”

Numbers 11

The Israelites@theisraelites

Barely back on the road and we started complaining. Fire from the LORD at the edge of the camp. We yelled for Moses, he prayed, and it died down.

no because does anyone else still think about the fish in egypt. free fish. cucumbers. melons. leeks. onions. garlic.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @the.rabble

Who’s going to give us meat?

Show 2 more replies
Moses@moses

Every family in the camp crying at their tent doors, and the LORD is angry. So I asked him today: did I give birth to these people? Why do I have to carry them like a nurse carries a baby?

Moses@moses

I can’t carry them all on my own. It’s too heavy. If this is how it’s going to be, please, just kill me now.

Moses@moses

His answer: seventy elders to share the load. And the people get their meat: a whole month of it, until it comes out of their noses. Because they rejected the LORD, who was right there among them.

Moses@moses

I said: meat for 600,000 men for a month? The LORD said: “Is the LORD’s arm too short?”

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Moses lined seventy of the elders up round the tent today. The LORD came down in the cloud and put some of the Spirit that’s on Moses on them, and they prophesied. Just that once, mind.

Two of the seventy, Eldad and Medad, never came out to the tent. The Spirit came on them anyway. Now they’re prophesying in the middle of the camp. Told Moses to stop them.

Replying to @joshua

I’m the one who ran and told him. Literally sprinted.

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Quail. Everywhere. The wind brought them in from the sea, all round the camp, a day’s walk in every direction. People were up all day, all night and all the next day collecting. Nobody got less than ten homers.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @inthecamp.desert

The meat was still between our teeth when the plague hit. We buried them there, and called it the graves of craving.

Numbers 12

Miriam@miriam · Hazeroth

Look, Aaron and I have been asking it. Does the LORD only speak through Moses? Hasn’t he spoken through us too?

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Replying to @miriam

For context: this all started over the Cushite woman Moses married.

Aaron@aaron

The LORD called the three of us out to the tent. Told us he speaks to prophets in visions and dreams, but to Moses face to face. Then asked why we weren’t afraid to speak against him.

Miriam@miriam

The cloud lifted, and I had the skin disease. White as snow.

Liked by Aaron

Aaron@aaron

Replying to @miriam

I begged my brother: please don’t hold this against us. We were stupid, and we sinned.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Miriam’s outside the camp for seven days. Nobody’s moving till she’s back.

Miriam@miriam

Replying to @theisraelites

They waited for me.

Numbers 13

Joshua son of Nun@joshua · Wilderness of Paran

Moses is sending twelve scouts into Canaan, one from each tribe. I’m one of them. Also, new name. Hoshea son of Nun is now Joshua.

Caleb son of Jephunneh@caleb · Valley of Eshcol

One bunch of grapes. Two men and a pole to carry it. Y’all are not ready for this place.

One of the ten scouts@scout.ten.one

Okay, it really does flow with milk and honey. But the people are strong, the cities are massive and walled, and we saw Anak’s descendants there.

Replying to @scout.ten.one

We should go up and take it. We can 100% do this.

Numbers 14

Someone in the crowd at Kadesh@crowd.kadesh · Kadesh

Everyone was crying all night. Honestly, I wish we’d died in Egypt. Or out here. Let’s pick a new leader and go back.

Replying to @crowd.kadesh

Caleb and I tore our clothes. That land is really, really good. Don’t turn against the LORD. Don’t be afraid of them. The LORD is with us.

Moses@moses

The LORD said he’d strike them down and make a greater nation out of me. I begged him. You’re slow to get angry and full of faithful love. Forgive them, like you have all the way from Egypt.

Moses@moses

He said: “I have forgiven them, as you asked.” But not one of the men who saw his glory and still tested him ten times will see the land.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Forty days scouting. Forty years in the desert. A year for each day.

The LORD says I’ve got a different spirit and I follow him with everything. I’m going in.

Replying to @caleb

Me too.

The ten who spread the bad report died of a plague. Of the twelve of us, only Joshua and I are left.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Okay. We were wrong. We’re going up now.

Moses@moses

Replying to @theisraelites

I told them not to. The LORD wasn’t with them. They went anyway, and got chased all the way back to Hormah.

Numbers 15

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Right, new one: tassels on your clothes, with a blue cord. You look down, you remember his commands.

Numbers 16

The Israelites@theisraelites

Did you hear? Korah, a Levite and Moses’ own cousin, has gone up against Moses and Aaron. Dathan and Abiram from Reuben are with him, and 250 of the community’s leaders.

Korah@korah

Everyone here is holy. All of us. The LORD is among us. So why do Moses and Aaron put themselves above everyone else? Just asking.

Dathan and Abiram@dathan.abiram

Hot take: Egypt was the land flowing with milk and honey.

Dathan and Abiram@dathan.abiram

Replying to @dathan.abiram

And no, we’re not coming when he sends for us. Cheers.

Moses@moses

Very angry today. I told the LORD not to accept their offering. I’ve never taken so much as a donkey off them. Never hurt a single one of them.

Moses@moses

I told everyone: if these men die a normal death, the LORD didn’t send me. If the ground opens and swallows them, you’ll know.

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Replying to @moses

Before that he told us all to get away from their tents and not touch anything of theirs. We backed right off.

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Moses had barely finished speaking. The ground split open under them and swallowed them and everything they had. The earth closed over them.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @inthecamp.desert

We all ran. We thought the ground would swallow us too.

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Next morning, and the whole community has turned on Moses and Aaron. People are saying they’ve killed the LORD’s people.

Aaron@aaron

Moses shouted at me to grab the incense. The plague had already started. I ran into the middle of them and stood between the dead and the living, and it stopped.

Numbers 17

Aaron@aaron

Twelve staffs went into the tent overnight, one for each tribe. Mine, the one for Levi, came out with buds, blossoms and ripe almonds. All three. On a dry stick. In one night.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @aaron

We’re all going to die, aren’t we? Anyone who goes near the LORD’s tent dies.

Numbers 18

Aaron@aaron

No land for me. The LORD says he’s my share. He’s what I get.

Numbers 20

Aaron@aaron · Kadesh

Our sister Miriam died at Kadesh. We buried her there.

The Israelites@theisraelites

No grain. No figs. No vines. No pomegranates. And no water.

Moses@moses

The LORD said: take the staff, and speak to the rock.

Moses@moses

I said: listen, you rebels, do we have to get water out of this rock for you? Then I hit it. Twice.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @moses

Water everywhere. Everyone drank, the animals too.

Moses@moses

The LORD said Aaron and I didn’t trust him enough to show his holiness in front of them. So we won’t be the ones to bring them into the land. He said speak. I hit it.

Moses@moses

Asked the king of Edom nicely. We’re family. Let us pass, we’ll stay on the King’s Highway. His answer: no, and if we try it he’ll meet us with swords.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @moses

We said we’d pay for any water we drank. Still no. So we went round.

Eleazar son of Aaron@eleazar · Mount Hor

Went up Mount Hor with my father and Moses. At the top, Moses took my father’s priestly clothes and put them on me. And my father died there.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @eleazar

Thirty days of mourning for Aaron. All of Israel.

Numbers 21

The Israelites@theisraelites

Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the desert? And we’re sick of this miserable food.

Moses@moses

Replying to @theisraelites

Then the LORD sent venomous snakes, and a lot of people died. They came to me: we sinned, pray for us. I prayed. The LORD said: make a snake and put it on a pole. Anyone bitten who looks at it will live.

Got bitten. Looked up at the bronze snake on the pole. I’m alive.

The Israelites@theisraelites · Beer

“Spring up, well! Everyone sing to it!” The LORD gave us water at Beer, and we sang.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Sihon wouldn’t let us through and attacked us at Jahaz. Og came out against us at Edrei. The LORD handed both of them over.

Numbers 22

Balak son of Zippor@king.balak · Plains of Moab

Kindly note: the whole of Moab is terrified of them. Our people have told the elders of Midian that this horde will lick up everything round us the way an ox licks up grass.

Balak’s officials@balaks.officials

We have been instructed to travel to the Euphrates and fetch Balaam son of Beor, fee in hand. The king’s position: whoever Balaam blesses is blessed, whoever he curses is cursed. He would like Israel cursed.

Balak’s officials@balaks.officials

Replying to @balaks.officials

Update: the seer declines. He says the LORD won’t let him.

Set off for Moab on my donkey, two of my servants with me. Three times she went off the road. She crushed my foot against a wall. Then she just lay down under me. Three times I beat her. Then she talked.

Balaam’s donkey@balaams.donkey

Three times I got out of the way, three times he beat me. So I asked him. What have I done to you? Have I ever done this to you before?

Replying to @balaams.donkey

I told her if I had a sword I’d kill her. Then I had to admit she’d never done this before.

Show 1 more reply

Then the LORD opened my eyes. The angel of the LORD, standing in the road with his sword drawn. He’d come out to block my way. He said if she hadn’t turned away, I’d be dead and she’d be alive. I said I’d sinned.

Balaam’s donkey@balaams.donkey

I saw the angel with the sword every time. He didn’t, until the end.

Balaam son of Beor@balaamThen the LORD opened my eyes. The angel of the LORD, standing in the road with his sword drawn. He’d come out to block my way. He said if she hadn’t turned away, I’d be dead and she’d be alive. I said I’d sinned.

Balaam has finally arrived. I asked him why he did not come when I first sent for him. Does he imagine I can’t afford him?

Replying to @king.balak

I’m here now, aren’t I? But I can only say what God puts in my mouth.

Numbers 23

Balaam son of Beor@balaam · Bamoth-baal

How can I curse someone God hasn’t cursed?

Replying to @balaam

I brought him here to curse my enemies. He has blessed them. Most helpful.

We shall try a different hill.

Balaam son of Beor@balaam · Pisgah

God isn’t a man. He doesn’t lie, and he doesn’t change his mind. If he says it, he does it. If he promises it, it happens.

Replying to @balaam

Fine. Don’t curse them at all, then. But kindly don’t bless them either.

Numbers 24

Balaam son of Beor@balaam · Peor

How lovely your tents are, Jacob. Your homes, Israel.

Replying to @balaam

Three times now you’ve blessed them. Go home. I said I’d reward you handsomely. The LORD has kept you from it.

I see him, but not now. Not near. A star is coming out of Jacob. A sceptre is going to rise out of Israel.

Numbers 23

Moses@moses

The Moab situation: 1. A king hires a man to curse us. 2. A donkey talks. 3. Three hilltops, seven altars on each. 4. Not one curse. Blessings, every time.

Numbers 25

Moses@moses · Shittim

Balaam couldn’t curse us. We did the damage ourselves. At Shittim the men started sleeping with Moabite women, went along to their gods’ sacrifices and bowed down. Israel joined in worshipping Baal of Peor, and the LORD was furious with us.

Numbers 26

Moses and I counted everyone again. Not one man from the first count at Sinai is on this list. Except Caleb and Joshua.

Replying to @eleazar

Still here.

Numbers 27

The daughters of Zelophehad@zelophehads.daughters

We’re Zelophehad’s daughters, all five of us. Our dad died with no sons. Why should his name disappear from his clan just because he had no son? Give us his land.

Moses@moses

Replying to @zelophehads.daughters

I took it to the LORD. His answer: “Zelophehad’s daughters are right.”

The daughters of Zelophehad@zelophehads.daughters

He said we’re right. And now it’s the law for everyone: no son, the land goes to his daughter.

Moses@mosesI took it to the LORD. His answer: “Zelophehad’s daughters are right.”
Moses@moses

The LORD told me to climb the mountain and look at the land. Then I die, like Aaron. Because of Meribah.

Moses@moses

All I asked: give them someone to lead them. Don’t let them be like sheep without a shepherd.

New role. The LORD named me to lead after Moses. He laid his hands on me in front of Eleazar and everyone.

Replying to @joshua

Two scouts said we could do it. One of them is leading now.

Numbers 29

Feast of Shelters: thirteen bulls, then twelve, eleven, ten, nine, eight, seven. Seventy bulls in a week.

Numbers 32

Asked Moses if we can stay this side of the Jordan. We’ve got a lot of animals, and Gilead is proper grazing land. He asked if our brothers are meant to go to war while we sit here.

Moses@moses

Replying to @gad.reuben

Deal. Build pens for your animals and towns for your kids here, then go in front of everyone and fight until every tribe has its land. Do that, and this land is yours. Don’t, and you can be sure your sin will catch up with you.

Numbers 33

Moses@moses

The LORD had me write down every camp since Egypt. Over forty of them. Last stop: the plains of Moab.

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

The LORD’s warning, passed on by Moses: anyone we let stay in the land will be barbs in our eyes and thorns in our sides.

Numbers 35

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.desert

Six cities of refuge. Kill someone by accident and you can run there and be safe until there’s a trial.

Numbers 36

The daughters of Zelophehad@zelophehads.daughters

All five of us married cousins on our father’s side. His land stayed in the clan.

Moses@moses

That’s Numbers. We’re on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan, across from Jericho. The land is right there, just over the river.
