Who's who

John 9
The believers@thebelievers · Jerusalem

Man blind from birth. Whose sin was it, his or his parents'?

Jesus@jesus

Neither this man nor his parents sinned. It happened so that God's work could be seen in him.

The man born blind@icannowsee · Pool of Siloam, Jerusalem

Mud on my eyes. Washed in the Pool of Siloam. I can see.

A neighbour@neighbour.itshim

Replying to @icannowsee

Wait. Isn't that the man who used to sit and beg?

Show 2 more replies

Taken to the Pharisees. Because it was the Sabbath, apparently.

A Pharisee from Jerusalem@pharisee.jerusalem

Replying to @icannowsee

This man is not from God. He does not keep the Sabbath.

The blind man’s parents@askhimhesoldenough

The leaders called us in. Yes, he's our son. Yes, he was born blind. How he sees now, or who did it, we don't know. Ask him. He's old enough.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @askhimhesoldenough

They were afraid. Anyone who said Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.

They called me back in. Told me to give glory to God, because they know this man's a sinner. Whether he's a sinner, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind, and now I see.

They made me go through it all again. I'd already told them, and they didn't listen. So I asked if they wanted to become his disciples too.

A Pharisee from Jerusalem@pharisee.jerusalem

Replying to @icannowsee

You are his disciple. We are disciples of Moses.

Honestly. Nobody has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a man born blind. If he weren't from God, he couldn't do anything.

A Pharisee from Jerusalem@pharisee.jerusalem

Replying to @icannowsee

You were soaked in sin from the day you were born, and you're lecturing us?

Daniel 1
The book of Daniel@bookofdaniel · Babylon

The king wants young men from Israel’s royal family and nobility. Good-looking, sharp, quick to learn. Three years learning the language and the books of the Babylonians, with food and wine from the king’s own table. Then into the king’s service.

Daniel@daniel

Replying to @bookofdaniel

Four of us from Judah: me, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. They’ve given us new names, apparently. I’m Belteshazzar now. They’re Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

Daniel@daniel

Made up my mind: I’m not going to make myself unclean with the king’s food and wine. Asked the chief official if I could be excused.

Ashpenaz@ashpenaz

Replying to @daniel

I like the lad. But I’m scared of the king. He decided what they eat. If he sees them looking thinner than the others their age, it’s my head.

The steward@the.steward

Ten days on vegetables and water. They look healthier and better fed than every one of the lads on the king’s food. So vegetables it is.

Interviewed the young men who’ve finished their training. Nobody comes close to the four from Judah. Whatever I ask them, they’re ten times better than every magician and enchanter in my kingdom.

The book of Daniel@bookofdaniel

Replying to @nebuchadnezzar

God gave the four of them knowledge and understanding of every kind of learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of every kind.

1 Corinthians 13
Paul@paul

If I speak in the languages of people and of angels but don’t have love, I’m just a noisy gong. A clanging cymbal. If I have faith that can move mountains but don’t have love, I’m nothing.

Paul@paul

Love is patient. Love is kind. It doesn’t envy. It doesn’t boast. It isn’t proud. It isn’t rude. It doesn’t insist on its own way. It isn’t easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs. It takes no pleasure in evil, but is glad about the truth. It puts up with everything, believes the best, keeps hoping, keeps going.

A believer in Corinth@corinth.believer

Replying to @paul

Reading this in a church where we take each other to court.

Paul@paul

When I was a child, I talked like a child and thought like a child. When I grew up, I put childish ways behind me. For now we see a dim reflection, like in a mirror. Then we’ll see face to face. Now I know in part. Then I’ll know fully, the way I’m fully known.

Paul@paul

Faith, hope and love. These three remain. And the greatest of them is love.

Exodus 16
The Israelites@theisraelites · Desert of Sin

Back in Egypt we sat round pots of meat and ate all the bread we wanted. And you’ve dragged us out here to starve the whole lot of us to death.

Moses@moses

Replying to @theisraelites

Who are we? You’re not grumbling against Aaron and me. You’re grumbling against the LORD.

An Israelite gathering manna@israelite.manna · Desert of Sin

genuine question. there are thin white flakes all over the ground this morning, fine as frost. what is it

Moses@moses

Replying to @israelite.manna

It’s the bread the LORD has given you to eat.

1 Samuel 24
One of David’s men@davidsmen · En-gedi

You won’t believe what happened today. We were hiding at the back of a cave near En-gedi, and who walks in to relieve himself? Saul.

Replying to @davidsmen

Told David this was the day the LORD talked about. He crept up and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. That’s it. A corner.

Saul@saul

It was David’s voice. My son. I wept. He’s more in the right than I am. He paid me back with good, and I paid him back with evil.

David@davidWent out after him and called out to the king. Bowed to the ground and held up the corner of his robe. Told him: the LORD put you in my hands in that cave. I was told to kill you. I didn’t. Let the LORD judge between us.
2 Kings 19

Got a letter from Sennacherib. Took it up to the house of the LORD and spread it out in front of him. LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim: you alone are God of every kingdom on earth. Their gods were only wood and stone, made by human hands. Save us, so every kingdom knows that you alone are the LORD.

Isaiah@isaiah

To Hezekiah. The LORD has heard your prayer about Sennacherib. Jerusalem shakes her head and laughs at you, Assyria. I’ll put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and send you home the way you came. He won’t enter this city or shoot one arrow here. I’ll defend this city, for my sake and for David’s.

Morning, and the Assyrian camp outside is full of dead men. 185,000. Everyone’s saying the angel of the LORD went through it in the night. Sennacherib has packed up and gone home to Nineveh.

Isaiah@isaiahTo Hezekiah.
Isaiah 65
Isaiah@isaiah

The LORD is going to create new heavens and a new earth. Nobody will even remember the old ones. No more crying heard in Jerusalem. No more babies who only live a few days. People will build houses and live in them, plant vineyards and eat the grapes themselves. Before they call, he’ll answer.

Isaiah@isaiah

The wolf and the lamb eating together. The lion eating straw like an ox. Nothing hurting or destroying anything on his holy mountain. Said it before. Saying it again.

Isaiah@isaiahThe wolf will live with the lamb. The leopard will lie down with the young goat. Calf and lion together, and a little child leading them. A toddler playing by a cobra’s hole. Nothing will hurt or destroy on all the LORD’s holy mountain, because the earth will be as full of knowing the LORD as the sea is full of water.
Jeremiah 32
The book of Jeremiah@bookofjeremiah

Tenth year of King Zedekiah. The Babylonian army has Jerusalem surrounded. Jeremiah is shut up in the courtyard of the guard at the palace.

Hanamel son of Shallum@hanamel.anathoth · Courtyard of the guard, Jerusalem

Popped in to see my cousin Jeremiah in the courtyard of the guard. Asked if he’d buy my field in Anathoth. He’s family, so he gets first dibs.

Jeremiah@jeremiah

Replying to @hanamel.anathoth

The LORD told me you’d come. So I bought it. Seventeen shekels of silver weighed out on the scales. Signed, sealed, witnesses, the lot.

Jeremiah@jeremiah

Lord God. You made the heavens and the earth by your great power. Nothing is too hard for you. The siege ramps are up against the city, and you’ve told me to buy a field.

Jeremiah@jeremiah

Replying to @jeremiah

His answer: I am the LORD, the God of everyone alive. Is anything too hard for me? Fields will be bought in this land again.

Esther 1
The book of Esther@bookofesther · Susa

Welcome to Susa, capital of Persia. The king is Xerxes, and he rules 127 provinces, from India to Cush at the far end of the Nile. Third year of his reign, he throws a party for every official and army leader in the empire. It lasts 180 days. The point is to show off how rich he is.

Someone in Susa@someone.insusa · Susa

And straight after that, a seven-day party in the palace garden for everyone in Susa, from the least important to the greatest. Things I saw: 1. White and blue linen hangings on silver rings and marble pillars. 2. Gold and silver couches on a mosaic floor. 3. Gold cups, every one a different design. 4. King's orders: no limit on the drinking.

Harbonah@harbonah · Susa

Day seven. The king had had a fair bit to drink, and sent seven of us to bring Queen Vashti, wearing her crown, so the people and officials could see how beautiful she is. She was giving her own banquet for the women inside the palace at the time.

Harbonah@harbonah

Replying to @harbonah

She said no.

Memucan@memucan

My view, since the king asked. The queen hasn't just wronged the king. She's wronged every official and every people in the empire. When women hear about this they'll look down on their husbands. They'll say the king sent for Queen Vashti and she didn't come. So: a royal decree, written into the laws of Persia and Media so it can never be undone. Vashti never comes before the king again, and her position goes to someone better.

The book of Esther@bookofesther

Replying to @memucan

The king loves it. Letters go out to every province, each in its own script and each people in its own language: every man is to be in charge of his own household.

Colossians 1
Paul@paul

Colossae. We’ve never stopped praying for you since the day we heard about you. God has rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. In him we’re set free, our sins forgiven.

Paul@paul

The Son is the image of the invisible God. Everything was made in him: in heaven and on earth, seen and unseen, thrones, powers, rulers, authorities. All of it was made through him and for him. He was there before anything else, and in him everything holds together.

Paul@paul

Replying to @paul

God was pleased to have all his fullness live in him, and through him to bring everything back to himself, making peace through the blood of his cross.

Paul@paul

A secret kept hidden for ages and generations, and now it’s out. Here it is: Christ in you, the hope of glory.
